GENERAL STATEMENT:   The goals of the SYEP are to improve job skills of unemployed, under-employed and economically disadvantaged youth, and to improve the total employment opportunities for youth in Ulster County.  The SYEP Lead Counselor is responsible for managing a group of youth participants as well as monitoring, planning and analyzing the effectiveness of SYEP and making recommendations on improvements.  The work is carried out under the general supervision of the Continuing Education Program Coordinator in change of SYEP.  Leeway is allowed for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative in carrying out the details of the work.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

 

1.      Works directly with the Program Coordinator in charge of SYEP to assist with the development and coordination of the program and serve as the primary counselor on the program.

2.     Interviews youth to gather and evaluate information related to prior work experience, education, specific skills, physical, personal and social background to aid in counseling youth toward a successful program;

3.     Develops community work sites for program participants, including interface-ing with employers, managing work site agreements and providing oversight of meaningful, age-appropriate job tasks;

4.     Provides one-on-one counseling and case management services to participants specifically in the area of workforce readiness and job success;

5.     Matches job-ready participants with available work site positions;

6.     Designs and runs orientation and information sessions for participants.

7.     Manages participant assessment and provides counseling and instructive feed-back when necessary;

8.     Coordinates employer and agency efforts to analyze affirmative action and equal employment opportunity plans;

9.     Maintains all required documentation, records, case notes, and reports in an organized, detailed and complete manner.

10. Conducts related work as required.

11. Acts as a positive role model to all participants.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree in social work, education or related field; experience in education, counseling, working with youth.
