Director of Athletics

Sullivan County Community College

 

 

The Director of Athletics reports to the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development Services and is responsible for the administration of the intercollegiate, intramural, recreational and physical education sports programs plus scheduling of the Field House and outdoor facilities.  Details, duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

·        Bachelor’s degree is required.  A Master’s is preferred.

·        A minimum of three (3) years experience in collegiate athletics management and intramurals or established proficiency in these areas.

·        Strong supervisory skills.

·        Ability to communicate effectively with students, athletes, staff, faculty, alumni, administrators and parents.

·        Ability to inspire achievement and leadership among students, athletes and staff.

·        Proficiency in the various software packages including Windows 95/98, Microsoft Office‘97, Corel Suite, Internet, and e-mail.

 

 

DIVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.                 Shall attend meetings of the Enrollment Management and Student Development Division.

2.                 Shall submit regular reports about intercollegiate, intramural, free recreation and all other Field House activities to the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development Services.

3.                 Shall submit a written annual report covering the period 9/1 to 8/31 to the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development no later than October 15 of each year.

4.                 Shall coordinate appropriate publicity of all athletic and field house events with coaches and College Public Relations Office.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION LIAISON:

 

Shall coordinate scheduling of facilities and equipment with Director of the Recreational Sports Management program.  Also, regarding evaluation of those who instruct and are appointed to coach, the Athletic Director will share coaching evaluation with the coach’s supervisor as well as with the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development Services.

 

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS DUTIES:

 

1.                 Shall coordinate the intercollegiate athletics program including contracts (team and officials) schedules, travel arrangements, and home game arrangements.

2.                 Shall monitor and guide all coaches regarding practice, competition, monitoring student athletes’ Academic responsibilities and personal conduct.    

3.                 Shall regularly attend home games to assure availability of facilities and appropriate conduct of competition.  May also attend away games as appropriate.

4.                 Shall recommend individuals to serve as coaches to the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development and the Faculty Student Association and shall recommend appropriate compensation.

5.                 Shall submit written evaluation of all coaches to the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development within four weeks of the conclusion of the particular sport.

6.                 Support coaches in recruitment of athletes and monitoring their academic progress.

 

7.                 Shall serve as interim coach of any sport, if necessary, shall determine that all athletes meet the minimum scholastic eligibility requirements as set forth by the NJCAA and Region XV and any other league requiring such information.  Shall review athlete’s eligibility with the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development.  Shall personally submit the eligibility rosters to the NJCAA office according to guidelines.

8.                 Shall follow all guidelines and submit required reports put forth by the title IX regulations.

9.                 Shall schedule physical exams for all intercollegiate athletics participants.  Shall insure that all athletes take physical exams in a timely manner.

10.            Shall be responsible for appropriate recognition of athletes including Athletic Awards Event(s), college sponsored awards and submitting of appropriate information to the NJCAA.

11.            Shall develop the annual Faculty Student Association budget for the intercollegiate athletics program.

12.            Shall maintain budget records for each sport.

13.            Shall attend all conference, regional, state and local athletic directors’ meetings.

 

 


INTRAMURAL AND FREE RECREATION DUTIES:

 

1.                 Shall supervise the Intramural Director.

2.                 Shall regularly review schedules and programs to assure a quality program for commuter, resident, traditional and non-traditional students.

3.                 Shall coordinate schedules for intramural and free recreation activities so as not to conflict with intercollegiate athletics or other official functions in the Field House or on the athletic fields.

4.                 Shall officiate when necessary at intramural contests.

5.                 Shall organize schedule for “drop in use” of facilities (weight room, nautilus, basketball courts) to maximum extent although giving priority to intercollegiate and intramural programs.

6.                 Assess interest, plan and implement special interest programs for students, staff and/or faculty such as: women’s self defense, aerobics, weight training, wellness activities and summer camps.

 

 

FIELD HOUSE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.                 Supervise Field House Coordinator of Field House Operation and Equipment and the Coordinator of Athletic Operations and Intramurals.

2.                 Shall be responsible for scheduling all activities in the Field House and/or outdoor athletic fields and settle conflicting requests in a positive manner.

3.                 Shall approve requests by all groups and/or individuals wanting to use the athletic facilities.

4.                 Shall prepare the annual College budget for the Field House.

5.                 Assure appropriate assignment and use of college work-study students.

6.                 Shall be responsible for operating concessions for events held in the Field House.

7.                 Monitor all employees to assure safe programs/facilities and appropriate conduct by participants.

 

 

 

FACULTY STUDENT ASSOCIATION RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.                 Shall attend the monthly Faculty Student Association meeting and any other Faculty Student Association meetings as required.

2.                 Shall serve as a voting member of the Faculty -Student Association.

3.                 Shall give a report on athletic activities to the Faculty-Student Association at its monthly meeting.

4.                 Shall monitor and submit all requisitions for purchases of uniforms, supplies and equipment needed for athletic programs to purchasing office (FSA a/o College).

5.                 Shall coordinate expenditure approval with student representative(s).

6.                 Shall authorize checks to be issued for all items received.

7.                 Shall recommend transportation arrangements for athletic teams.

8.                 Shall recommend lodging arrangements for athletic teams.

 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development.
