Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs

Mitch Leventhal joined SUNY as Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs in September 2009. An international leader in the area of international education policy and practice, Dr. Leventhal is a vocal advocate for important reform of US recruiting practice, development of new financing paradigms in support of campus internationalization, creation of technical systems better designed to support comprehensive internationalization, and deeper and more creative approaches to engagement with corporate partners.
Dr. Leventhal is a co-founder and past president of the American International Recruitment Council (AIRC), a standard development organization which has developed the first rigorous certification process for international student recruitment agencies. He also serves as Senior Advisor on Academic Affairs to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), where he heads a global academic working group which is developing an implementation and reporting framework so that higher education institutions can adopt UNGC principles with the same efficacy as corporations. Prior to his appointment at SUNY, he served as Vice Provost for International Affairs at the University of Cincinnati. While at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Leventhal developed networked database systems for comprehensively mapping global engagement across the university enterprise; this initiative became the open-source and cloud-based UCosmic® Consortium, a global movement to develop data standards and low-cost systems to enable institutions to manage global operations more strategically.
Immediately prior to working at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Leventhal headed North American operations for IDP, a global student recruitment firm owned by the Australian universities. Before commencing his university career, Dr. Leventhal was founder and president of the financial technology firm Microstate Corporation, founding CEO of the Intellectual Property Technology Exchange – a corporate spin-off from Yale University, and co-founder and vice president for strategic initiatives of Planet Payment, Inc., a publicly traded provider of multi-currency payment solutions.
Dr. Leventhal earned his bachelors and masters degrees in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. in the International Political Economy of Higher Education from the University of Chicago. Dr. Leventhal resides in New York City.
