About SUTEC ::: A Key Resource
SUTEC provides students with a wide range of programs and services:
Student Teacher Orientation
Each semester begins with a Student Teacher Orientation for all SUNY student teachers in city schools. Students meet peers from their own campus
as well as from other campuses, some of whom may be teaching in the same host school(s). They also receive important guidance regarding living in
New York City and working in the city school system. SUTEC hosts workshops throughout the semester on such topics as learning how to obtain a
teaching position in the city.
Student Teaching Seminar
Many of the SUNY student teachers participate in a seminar conducted
by SUTEC while engaged in student teaching in the city. The seminar is designed to prepare caring, critical, and reflective professionals who are
academically strong, pedagogically skilled, and responsive to the needs of diverse classrooms. Discussions, reflections, and peer sharing are
integral activities of the seminars.
Short-term affordable student housing can be very hard to find in New York City. To meet the needs of student
teachers, particularly those from upstate New York, who must be in residence in the city, SUTEC has a limited number of two-bedroom apartments in
the Parkchester, Bronx, New York apartment complex. SUTEC/Parkchester housing applications, which require submission of a commitment deposit, are
accepted on a “first come first served” basis. Please contact your campus Director of Field Placement for details concerning the
housing application process and due dates.
Typically, two students share a bedroom. The SUTEC/Parkchester furnished apartments include: two bedrooms (with beds, mattresses, desks, chairs,
desk lights, dressers, closets), a kitchen (with refrigerator, stove, sink, cabinets, microwave oven, cooking utensils), a dining area (with
dining table and chairs), living room (with couch, tables, TV, air conditioning, coffee table), bathroom (with sink, bathtub and shower),
high-speed internet cable (with wireless cable router), cable TV, unlimited long distance telephone service within the U.S., and utilities. An
illustrated description of the Parkchester housing complex, including detailed travel directions, is available at the following website:
The actual cost of the SUTEC/Parkchester apartment is considerably higher than that of the typical SUNY dormitory fee. However, by means of a
special “SUTEC Grant Award," the SUTEC/Parkchester housing is made available at a cost comparable to that of a dormitory room at the
student's home campus.
The “SUTEC Grant Award” is only available for the SUTEC/Parkchester housing. Students who make their own
housing arrangements are responsible for the full costs of their personal housing arrangements
SUTEC sponsors periodic gatherings for field supervisors, providing an opportunity to share their
expertise, and exchange ideas.
SUTEC also organizes occasional symposia on urban education themes that bring together campus administrators
and faculty, NYC classroom teachers, principals, and superintendents, as well as others with expertise in urban education.
