SUNY Board Chairman H. Carl McCall Announces Pedro Noguera's Resignation

February 01, 2012

Albany – SUNY Board Chairman H. Carl McCall today announced that Trustee Pedro Noguera has informed him that he is resigning from the SUNY Board of Trustees.

“As chair of the Board’s Education, College Readiness and Success Committee and a member of the Board since 2008, Pedro Noguera has provided diligent counsel and exemplary service to the State University of New York, the Charter Schools Institute, and New York State,” said Chairman McCall. “I thank him for this service and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

The Charter Schools Act of 1998 grants the SUNY Board authorizing power to grant 230 charters for the purpose of organizing and operating independent and autonomous public charter schools. The Charter Schools Institute was created by the SUNY Board in 1999 to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities under the Act.

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of SUNY. It consists of 18 members, 15 of whom are appointed by the Governor, by and with consent of the New York State Senate. In addition, the president of the Student Assembly serves as student trustee and the presidents of the University Faculty Senate and Faculty Council on Community Colleges serve as ex-officio trustees.

SUNY Trustees serve on a voluntary basis and do not receive compensation. Pedro Noguera was first appointed to the SUNY Board in 2008 by then Governor David Paterson.
