“Stony Brook has a true and dedicated leader in President Sam Stanley and he has my and SUNY’s steadfast support as president and admiration as a champion of public higher education.

“Assemblyman Fred Thiele’s recent comments calling for Dr. Stanley's resignation are totally off the mark.

“Under Dr. Stanley's leadership, Stony Brook is recognized as one of our nation's finest public universities with highly ranked academic and research programs, burgeoning applications, a strong alumni base and a commitment to enhancing Long Island's economy and the well-being of its residents.

“Dr. Stanley has been a major contributor to the development and now implementation of SUNY’s new strategic plan, The Power of SUNY. He has been a valuable partner in the advocacy to achieve comprehensive reform for SUNY through the Empowerment Act. Dr. Stanley is deeply committed to maintaining access for low-income and middle-class students through a fair, equitable and responsible rational tuition policy.

“I stand firmly behind President Stanley and assure Stony Brook University’s students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends that they have as President an individual most highly skilled and best suited to meet the challenges facing the campus in these extraordinary times.”
