New York City – SUNY Vice
Chancellor for Global Affairs Mitch Leventhal today named Dr. Daniel J. Julius
as executive director of the SUNY Levin Institute. A New York native, Julius previously
served as vice president for academic affairs and research at the University of
Alaska System.
“Dr. Julius brings broad
experience and vast knowledge to the position and his academic leadership will
greatly strengthen the Levin Institute team going forward,” said Leventhal. “I
want to thank Tom Moebus for his dedication and leadership both throughout his
time at Levin, especially during this transition and in the future.”
About Dr. Daniel Julius
Dr. Julius served as vice
president for academic affairs and research at the University of Alaska System
from 2007 to 2012. In this capacity, he played a leading role in program and degree
development, student success initiatives, building research capacity,
international affairs, approval of new doctoral programs, and identification of
new revenue streams for UA.
From 2003-07, Dr. Julius was vice president for academic affairs, and a
professor in the School of Business, at Benedictine University. From 1986-2002,
he served as associate vice president for academic affairs, director for the
Center for Strategic Leadership, and professor at the University of San
Francisco. Previously, he held leadership positions in the California State
University System, Vermont State College System, and Columbia University.
Dr. Julius has been a faculty
member at the Stanford University School of Business and at the University of
California, Berkeley, Center for Studies in Higher Education. He is currently affiliated
with the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute (CHERI).
Dr. Julius has a
BA from The Ohio State University, a master’s and doctoral degree from Columbia
University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship and was a visiting scholar
at Stanford University.
Dr. Julius will be paid an

Dr. Julius succeeds renowned
broadcast journalist Mr. Garrick Utley, who was recently appointed professor of
broadcasting and journalism at SUNY Oswego, and continues as a senior fellow at
Levin after stepping down as head of the Institute in December of 2011. Since
that time, vice president of the Institute, Thomas Moebus, has served as
interim director.
