State Legislation
Provides SUNY Board Seat for President of the Faculty Council of Community
Colleges
Albany – The State University
of New York Board of Trustees and Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher today welcomed
Dr. Tina Good as the newest Board member, following legislation signed by
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo last month that provided a seat on the Board for the
president of the Faculty Council of Community Colleges. Dr. Good was sworn in
as trustee at today’s general Board meeting.
Board Chairman Carl T. Hayden
said, “The presidents of the Faculty Senate and Faculty Council on Community
Colleges have long been informal advisors to the trustees, giving faculty
governance a voice in the boardroom. With today’s official addition of FCCC
President Tina Good, however, I can finally say the Board is complete, with
representation from all groups that make up the SUNY family, including students
and faculty from all campuses. We take
great delight in welcoming Tina Good to the SUNY Board of Trustees.”
“As the largest comprehensive
system of higher education in the nation, we are fortunate that we can call 30
stellar community colleges our own,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “It is only
appropriate, then, that the president of the FCCC serve as a member of our
Board of Trustees. We welcome Tina as she joins SUNY students and faculty of
our state-operated campuses, bringing full circle our commitment to shared
governance throughout the system. Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature
deserve great praise for recognizing the value in adding Tina’s voice to the
Board, and we look forward to working closely with her on issues critical to
the 64- campuses state university system for years to come.”
"It
is my honor, as president of the Faculty Council, to have this opportunity to
serve on the SUNY Board of Trustees," said Trustee Good. "I have had
the great pleasure of working with this Board over the last two years and have
appreciated their commitment to a deliberative and collaborative process.
Because of them and the forward thinking of Chancellor Zimpher and state lawmakers,
the Faculty Council’s leadership will be able to bring a variety of
perspectives from our campuses to the table as SUNY continues to experience
challenges and triumphs in the years ahead."
Legislation signed last month
by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo provided for an ex-officio, non-voting seat on the
SUNY Board, for the president of the Faculty Council on Community Colleges,
increasing the size of the board from 17 to 18 members. The president of the
Faculty Senate, which represents faculty at the SUNY state-operated campuses,
was given an ex-officio seat on the Board in 2006.
The Legislation was sponsored
by Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and Assemblyman Rob Canestrari and signed into
law by Governor Cuomo August 3, 2011.
