Albany
-- Albany High School scholar-athlete Emily Regan has received the 2011 Ben M.
Becker Memorial Scholarship and will attend the University at Buffalo (UB) in
the fall, the State University of New York announced today. Emily, who will
major in biomedical sciences at UB, was presented with the award at Albany
High’s graduation ceremony this past weekend.
SUNY
Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher said, "Congratulations to Emily Regan on
receiving this year's Ben M. Becker Memorial Scholarship. Throughout her high
school career, Emily has excelled in the classroom and in several different
sports, deeming her more than qualified to receive this award. I applaud Becker
Foundation founder Bob Becker for his dedication to Albany High School student
athletes and thank him for his continued support of SUNY."
This
prestigious scholarship carries on the legacy of its namesake, Ben M. Becker,
who was internationally acclaimed for his achievements as an educator and
Olympic boxing coach, as well as for his momentous contributions to mentoring
and inspiring youth. The award recognizes participation in interscholastic
athletics, strong academic achievement, and strength of character.
Ms.
Regan was an outstanding scholar-athlete at Albany High School, participating
in both indoor and outdoor track, as well as soccer, tennis, and bowling. She
was named to the President’s List and has been involved in Key Club, Habitat
for Humanity, and Student Government.
"The
Selection Committee has once again chosen a very deserving individual to bestow
our award upon,” said Bob Becker. “The student recipients have consistently
been the best of the best and Emily Regan is no exception. Her record is
exemplary."
About
the Ben M. Becker Memorial Scholarship
In 1996, Bob Becker, Ben’s
son, founded The Becker Foundation with the mission of helping deserving
students achieve their dream of a college education. The SUNY Ben M. Becker
Memorial Scholarship Award, supported by The Becker Foundation, is provided
annually to the most qualified Albany High School senior who will be attending
a SUNY institution.
The
Ben M. Becker Memorial Scholarship Award was increased in 2007 to $3,000,
making it the most lucrative privately endowed college scholarship award at
Albany High School. The scholarship is awarded at $1,500 per year over the
first two academic years, with the second installment predicated upon good
academic standing at SUNY at the end of the first year.
