State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher will lead a broad discussion on diversity
at the fourth of seven statewide conversations on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 as part of
the system’s comprehensive strategic
planning process. Two hundred stakeholders from across the state will
convene at the SUNY College of
Technology at Delhi to engage in the theme of “Diversity in the
World.” Preceding the conversation, there will be an open
forum where those interested in the future of SUNY can attend and provide
testimony.
The day will feature keynote
speaker Yolanda Moses, special assistant to the chancellor for excellence and
diversity and vice provost for conflict resolution at the University of California – Riverside. As
a senior academic administrator immersed every day in issues relevant to the
discussion at hand, Moses will speak on the challenges of diversity facing
universities and how they can incorporate those challenges in helping to meet
their mission.
In addition, a student panel
will reflect on their own experiences involving diversity and help to provide a
21st century perspective on the issue.
“Diversity in the World” as a
theme will focus on SUNY’s role in utilizing diversity to have a profoundly
positive impact on the learning experience, promote the ability to think
creatively and remain open to new ideas and perspectives, and provide critical
skills in a complex and intensely competitive workplace. Moreover,
participants will discuss what diversity means to the current generation of
students, and how SUNY can incorporate those values into its goals.
Leading up to the
conversation, SUNY’s social media initiative, “Generation SUNY,” has made
available two items:
On YouTube,
SUNY vice provost for diversity and educational equity, Pedro Caban, discusses
“Diversity in the World” and the role SUNY can play.
On Facebook, SUNY Student
Assembly director of diversity Stefen Short blogs about the subject in his
piece “We
Must Live Diversity, Not Learn Diversity.”
Media interested in attending
the conversation should contact in advance for further information. Attached is
a general agenda for the event.
