Statement from SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher

“President Lois DeFleur reported to me in detail the issues confronting Binghamton University’s Athletic Department and the Men’s Basketball team, and she outlined the corrective measures she would undertake to address these issues.

“I fully support the steps President DeFleur is taking with regard to activity in the athletic department and I will follow up with her in the coming days.

“The issue of academic integrity goes to the core of the university and is my top priority as a lifelong educator. Earlier this year, concerns were raised that academic integrity may have been impacted at Binghamton as a result of activity in the athletic department.

“A careful review was conducted at that time at Binghamton, and I have been assured by President DeFleur that this was not the case. Nevertheless, as part of the audit process which will now occur, I have asked President DeFleur to engage the campus community, especially the faculty, to pay particular attention to maintaining both academic and athletic integrity.  I have also asked President DeFleur to keep me informed as the audit proceeds, and report to me on its final findings and recommendations.”
