SUNY Board of Trustees Approves the Appointment of Dr. John W. Deans as Interim President of Broome County Community College

September 15, 2009

Draft quotes not approved

New York City – The State University of New York Board of Trustees today approved the appointment of Dr. John W. Deans as interim president of Broome County Community College, as previously approved by the campus Board of Trustees. Dr. Deans’ appointment is effective immediately, through Dec. 31, 2009, at an annual salary of $67,500.

“I visited the Broome County Community College campus a little over a month ago and it was very apparent that Dr. Deans has earned the respect of the faculty, staff and students at the college and has embedded himself skillfully within the local community,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “Dr. Deans is an excellent candidate to lead the campus during this interim period. I commend both the college Board and the SUNY trustees for this appointment.”

“Broome County Community College is now educating more students than it has in the history of the college, with more than 6,300 full and part-time students on the campus this fall,” said SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden. “These students, faculty and staff at Broome have shown confidence in Dr. Deans as a leader and I am pleased that today the Board is able to approve his appointment as their interim president.”

“I want to thank Chancellor Zimpher for her support and the SUNY Board of Trustees for the appointment as Interim President of Broome Community College," said Dr. Deans. "Broome Community College is one of the crown jewels in the SUNY Community College system. I will devote my efforts to build upon BCC’s solid foundation so that students from across the Southern Tier will have every opportunity possible to obtain the highest quality education from a dedicated and experienced faculty.”

About Dr. John W. Deans

Dr. Deans served with great distinction as President of Jefferson Community College from 1992 to 2003 and as Interim President of the same institution from March 2006 to January 2007.

Prior to those terms as the College’s chief executive officer, he served Jefferson Community College as Academic Dean (1984-1991), Chair of the Division of Liberal Arts (1977-1984), and Chair of the Department of Social Sciences (1972-1976).  During his entire history at Jefferson Community College (1967-2003), Dr. Deans also served as a classroom instructor of History and Political Science.

In addition to his posts in higher education, it is noteworthy that among his community service positions, Dr. Deans has also served as Mayor of the Village of Sackets Harbor from 2003 to 2006.

About the Presidential Search

The previous President of Broome Community College, Dr. Lawrence Spraggs, retired from the position effective June 30, 2008.  During the ensuing search for a new President of the College, Dr. Daniel T. Hayes served as Interim President, concluding his term of appointment on June 30, 2009.  After careful deliberation and interviews, the Broome Community College Board of Trustees determined that Dr. Deans was the individual best qualified to serve as the next Interim President while the search for a permanent President continued.  On June 25, 2009, the Board appointed Dr. Deans as Administrator-in-Charge, effective July 1, 2009, pending subsequent approval of his appointment as Interim President by the SUNY Board of Trustees.
