Cary F. Staller and John L. Murad Join SUNY Board of Trustees

Cary Staller takes Kay Stafford's seat (which expired LAST year on June 30, 2008) Which means that he is effective immediately for a term that expires on June 30, 2015

New York City – The State University of New York Board of Trustees today welcomed its two newest members, Cary F. Staller and John L. Murad, who were recently appointed to the Board by Governor David Paterson.

 

Governor Paterson said, "Cary Staller and John Murad are two exemplary individuals who bring unique perspectives and backgrounds to SUNY and will serve with distinction on the Board of Trustees. I look forward to working with our new Chancellor, Nancy Zimpher, and the entire board as we work to create a new economy based on knowledge, technology and innovation, in particular by capitalizing on our wonderful research institutions across the state."

 

Board Chairman Carl T. Hayden said, “We are delighted to welcome Cary Staller and John Murad to the Board of Trustees. This is an exciting time for SUNY as we have just welcomed Chancellor Zimpher, and under her leadership, we are developing a long-term strategic plan for the future of the University. Trustees Staller and Murad possess backgrounds and community ties that will be most valuable in this process and as SUNY continues to move forward.”

 

SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher added, “The addition of Trustees Staller and Murad will strengthen the Board and I commend Governor Paterson for two excellent appointments.  We have a great deal of work to do in the coming months as a new vision for SUNY begins to take shape and I look forward to meeting the challenges ahead with the Board of Trustees.”

 

Trustee Staller said, “I want to thank Governor Paterson for appointing me to the SUNY Board. It will be a privilege and my honor to serve alongside Chairman Hayden and the rest of the Board as we work together with Chancellor Zimpher on defining the future of the University.”

 

Trustee Murad said, “I am very pleased to be joining the SUNY Board of Trustees. SUNY has a bright future ahead and I am grateful to Governor Paterson, Chancellor Zimpher, Chairman Hayden and my fellow board members for allowing me to be part of it.”

 

About Cary F. Staller
Cary F. Staller was appointed to the SUNY Board of Trustees on June 3, 2009, for a term that will expire on June 30, 2015.  He is President of Staller Associates, Inc., a commercial real estate firm, with offices in Hauppauge, New York.

Mr. Staller is the Secretary and a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Stony Brook Foundation at Stony Brook University.  Since 1988, Cary Staller has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University.  Mr. Staller previously served on the Quality Assessment Review Board of Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Cary Staller is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  Mr. Staller was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.  Following graduation from law school, Mr. Staller worked as an attorney specializing in real estate and tax law. 

Mr. Staller served as the Mayor of the Village of Old Field from 1999 until 2008, when he retired from this position. 

Mr. Staller is a member of the bar of the State of New York.  He and his wife reside in the Village of Old Field on Long Island.  They are the parents of three children.

About John L. Murad
John L. Murad was appointed to the SUNY Board of Trustees June 3, 2009 to a term that will expire June 30, 2013.

John L. Murad, Jr. is a partner in the Syracuse, New York Law Firm of Hancock & Estabrook, LLP, where he has practiced since 1983. He has served as the Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department and on its Executive Committee. Mr. Murad graduated from Hamilton College with a B.A. (cum laude) in 1980 and obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1983. Mr. Murad was appointed to the Board in June of 2009.

Mr. Murad is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and is active in several Bar Associations. He has served as the Chair of the Onondaga-Oswego Chapter of the American Red Cross and presently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Onondaga Historical Association.

Mr. Murad, who was born in Utica, New York, presently resides in Jamesville, New York with his wife Renee L. James and their three children, Matthew, Bess and Patrick.

 

About the SUNY Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the State University of New York. It consists of 17 members, 15 of whom are appointed by the Governor, by and with consent of the New York State Senate. In addition, the president of the Student Assembly serves as student trustee and the president of the University Faculty Senate serves as an ex-officio trustee.

Trustees Staller and Murad replace Kay Stafford and Thomas Egan, respectively, on the Board.
