Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher Takes Office

Dave - release should capture four pts she's making at newser:

Albany – As part of her first day in office, State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher outlined a statewide tour of the entire SUNY System as a first step in the process of developing a strategic plan for the university.

Chancellor Zimpher said, “We are off and running. We are going to do a 64 campus tour, we have worked for months on it and it will begin in earnest on Wednesday morning.  I will be at the SUNY Colleges at Cornell, the next day we will be at the University at Albany. Friday we will be at Mohawk Valley Community College and Saturday at Binghamton University.  Monday we start all over again.”

Chancellor Zimpher was joined by SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden.  In discussing the search that brought Chancellor Zimpher to SUNY, Chairman Hayden said, “We think we found the best person in the country.”

In describing the 64-campus tour Chancellor Zimpher said, “It is a serious step one in strategic planning for the State University of New York.   Job one, according to Chairman Hayden and the Board of Trustees, is a strategic plan with a five- and ten-year window where we plot out the goals and aspirations for this system.”

The chancellor also discussed the importance of collaborating with all SUNY stakeholders and of having a shared vision for SUNY saying, “Vision trumps everything.  I believe vision is derived at the hands of many. It cannot be a single vision, it must be owned by all.  I am very strategic, I think action is everything. We must be able to act and to hold ourselves accountable.

“I understand about the constancy and persistence of message.  I do intend to be a tireless spokesperson for the State University, its constituent campuses, and the greatness that is SUNY.”

In making the announcement for the beginning of the 64-campus tour and the strategic plan, Chancellor Zimpher and Chairman Hayden were joined today by student and faculty leadership.

President of the Faculty Senate Carl Wiezalis, President-Elect Ken O'Brien, President of the Faculty Council of Community Colleges Milton Johnson, President-Elect Tina Good, President of the Student Assembly and member of the SUNY Board of Trustees, Melody Mercedes, Vice President of the Student Assembly Keisha Dobney, Treasurer of the Student Assembly Darius Arrendell, and Secretary of the Student Assembly Julie Gondar were all in attendance at the news conference to show their support for the new chancellor on her first day.
