Albany – As
part of the semi-annual public hearings held November 18, 2008 by the Board of
Trustees of The State University of New York, the Board will hear from leaders
around the University system on eight panel topics that address critical intersections
between SUNY and the state budget, the local and state economy, tuition and
financial aid, trends in enrollment and faculty retention.
“Given the
severity of the current fiscal crisis, strengthening lines of communications
will serve SUNY well,” said SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden. “By
interacting with students, faculty, administrators and other members of the
university’s community, we can more effectively work together to preserve the
quality and value of a SUNY education. At the same time, we must ensure
continuing access to SUNY for New York’s citizens. After all, a well-educated
and competitive workforce is essential for New York’s future economic growth.”
Eight panels,
representing state-operated campus presidents, chief academic officers, campus
business officers, the University Faculty Senate, the Faculty Council of
Community Colleges, the SUNY Student Assembly, the New York Community College Association
of Presidents, and the New York Community College Trustees and the Association
of Council Members and College Trustees, are scheduled to make presentations to
members of the Board.
Each panel
will have approximately 15 minutes with time for audience questions. Persons
who wish to make brief comments (no more than three minutes due to time
constraints) are requested to file the request in advance of the hearing with
the Hearing Registration Officer in the Federal Court Room at State University
Plaza at 3:00 p.m. on the day of the hearing as names will be called in the
order in which they have registered.
State law
mandates that the SUNY Trustees hold semi-annual public hearings to receive
testimony from interested parties on SUNY-related issues.
SUNY Trustees serve
on a voluntary basis without compensation. Members of the Board are appointed
by the governor with the consent of the state Senate and serve seven-year terms.
The public
hearing will be webcast. Instructions for accessing the webcast will be available
the morning of Nov. 18, 2008 at www.suny.edu.
