BOT Names Dr. Larry Tyree Interim President of Monroe Community College

Following a national search, I recommend your approval of the appointment of Nancy Kleniewski as President at the State University of

New York City – The State University of New York Board of Trustees today voted unanimously to name Dr. Lawrence ‘Larry’ Tyree the interim president of Monroe Community College. In this position, Dr. Tyree will earn an annual salary of $215,000, as approved by the board of trustees at the campus. This appointment is effective immediately, through May 17, 2009.

 

SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden said, “Dr. Larry Tyree will be of considerable assistance to Monroe Community College during this period of transition.  He brings to the college a long and distinguished career as a community college president, holding national distinction through his work with the League for Innovation. We are pleased to be welcoming him to the Monroe campus.”

 

“Monroe Community College is one of our largest and most diverse community college campuses,” said SUNY Interim Chancellor Dr. John B. Clark.  “I am pleased that Dr. Tyree has agreed to lead the campus while we search for a permanent president and I am sure he will be most successful with his excellent background and management skills.”

 

Dr. Tyree said, “I appreciate the confidence the SUNY Board of Trustees and Interim Chancellor Clark have placed in me. I look forward to working with SUNY’s leadership, the MCC Board of Trustees, the MCC family and the Greater Rochester community to build on the college’s strengths and move the college forward.”

 

Tyree succeeds Thomas Flynn, who retired in August, after serving for eight years as the college’s fourth president. Interim Chancellor Clark and the SUNY Board thanked Flynn for his years of outstanding service to SUNY and to the Monroe campus.

 

About Dr. Tyree

Dr. Tyree’s most recent service is as Interim President at several community colleges, including Independence Community College in Kansas, Johnson County Community College in Kansas, and Jefferson Community and Technical College District in Kentucky.  In recent years he as also served as Professor and Director of the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and Executive Director of the National Alliance of Community and Technical Colleges.  Prior to those posts, he served as President of Santa Fe Community College for eleven years and President of Gulf Coast Community College in Florida for twelve years.  He also served in several other administrative positions during his distinguished career.

 

His record of publication and professional activities is extensive, including writings on community college leadership and leadership positions with numerous educational professional organizations, including the American Association of Community Colleges, the League for Innovation in the Community College, and the American Council on Education.  He has received many awards and recognitions for his outstanding achievements.
