BOT Approves the Appointment of Dr. Alan Mathios as Dean of the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University

New York City – The State University of New York Board of Trustees today voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Dr. Alan Mathios Dean of the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University, for a five-year term. In this position, Dr. Mathios earns an annual salary of $150,000, effective July 1, 2008.

 

SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden said, “Dr. Mathios is a SUNY alum who has been a member of the faculty at the College of Human Ecology for many years. His appointment as Dean of the college is a well-deserved capstone to an esteemed career on the campus and in the community. I am pleased to support his appointment as Dean.”

 

“Dr. Mathios has been serving as the interim dean at the campus since July of last year and has proven to be a strong and capable leader who has his worked well with the students, faculty and staff at the campus,” said SUNY Interim Chancellor Dr. John B. Clark.  “It is my pleasure to support his appointment as Dean and I am confident his success at the campus will continue.”

 

Dr. Mathios said, "The College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is an incredible institution with a foundation of strong, distinct disciplines and a commitment to integrating our three missions of academics, research and outreach. Human Ecology has forged a dynamic and unique approach to creating and sharing knowledge to advance and improve the human condition. I am honored, humbled and excited to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading the college on its amazing trajectory. I am especially proud to be a product of the SUNY system, having earned a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. It is there that my love for learning flourished and where my interactions with dedicated faculty inspired me to pursue graduate education in the field of economics."

 

About Dr. Mathios

Dr. Mathios has been serving as the Interim Dean of the College of Human Ecology since July 2007. He succeeds Lisa Staiano-Coico, who last July became provost of Temple University.  He was elected to the post for a five-year term at a meeting in June 2008 of the Cornell University Board of Trustees.

 

Prior to being interim dean, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Undergraduate Education for the College of Human Ecology. He has been on the faculty of the School since 1992. Previously, he worked for the Federal Trade Commission as an economist and econometrics consultant. 

 

Dr. Mathios was educated at the State University of New York at Buffalo, receiving his B.A. degree in Economics/Psychology. He received his Ph.D degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He is he co-editor of the Journal of Consumer Policy and on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Consumer Affairs and the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing. He is also Project Leader on the Merck Foundation Co. Program Consumers, Pharmaceutical Policy and Health.
