Albany – Forty-two graduate programs on five State University of New York
campuses have ranked among the best in the nation according to the 2009 edition
of U.S. News & World Report’s guide, “America’s Best Graduate
Schools.” Graduate programs at the Universities at Albany, Buffalo and Stony
Brook, as well as the College at New Paltz and the New York State College of
Ceramics at Alfred University had high-ranking programs.
Two fine
arts programs, the Metals/Jewelry program
at SUNY New Paltz and the Ceramics program at the New York State College of
Ceramics were rated No. 1 in the nation. The academic quality of these
two programs were judged by experts at peer institutions to be
“outstanding.” In order to be considered by the magazine, specialty
programs in fine arts must be nominated by deans, and other top academics.
“SUNY provides New Yorkers with access to a number of outstanding,
nationally-ranked graduate programs, and these programs attract students from
around the world,” said SUNY Interim Chancellor Dr. John B. Clark. “I
commend our SUNY campus presidents, faculty and staff for achieving national
recognition. Their success brings attention to New York State and adds to
SUNY’s national reputation for quality graduate education.”
“While
rankings do not tell the entire story of any program, this important
recognition is a reflection of continued excellence in scholarship and teaching
by our faculty members,” said SUNY Provost Risa I. Palm. “It is also an
indication of SUNY’s ability to attract top quality graduate and professional
students.”
The
following SUNY campuses had ranked programs:
The College at New Paltz
The College at New Paltz’s Metals/Jewelry program ranked first in the
nation in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) category and was named among the 100
best programs in America, according to U.S. News.
“Gifted
faculty, teachers and artists have made the metals program an absolute gem and
a leading intellectual and creative light on our campus," said New Paltz
President Steven Poskanzer. "I couldn't be happier for our metals faculty,
alumni and current students.”
The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University
The Master
of Fine Arts program of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University is one of the 10 best in the nation, according to U.S. News.
In addition to the No. 1 ranking of the Ceramics program, the Glass program at
the College of Ceramics was judged to be the second best program of its kind in
the nation.
“I am
pleased that the U.S. News & World Report rankings continue to rate
our MFA program as tops in the country for ceramic art,” said Suzanne Buckley,
provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Alfred University. “I am
also delighted to see that our glass art program is tied for number two. Both
rankings are a testament to the fine work of our faculty and students and are
affirmed by many substantive measures of excellence.”
The
University at Albany
The University at Albany had five programs in the top 10 in their
respective categories. The Information and Technology Management and
Criminology programs each ranked second in the nation. In addition, Public Finance and Budgeting ranked
seventh, Public Management/Administration eighth, and in the Library and
Information category, the Archives program was ninth in the nation.
“We are
extremely proud of the high marks we've received, which clearly reflect our
commitment to enhancing the University's academic and research programs,” said
Susan Phillips, interim provost and vice president of academic affairs. “Our
highly-regarded programs and outstanding faculty members continue to attract motivated
students from all over the world.”
The University at Buffalo
Nine University at Buffalo graduate programs ranked among the top 100
programs in country; the Audiology program was ranked highest at 16th.
“We are
gratified to see the University at Buffalo recognized among the strongest
graduate and professional programs in the country,” said University at Buffalo
Provost Satish K. Tripathi. “The U.S. News rankings is one
indication of the early success of our UB 2020 strategy, which has focused on hiring
outstanding faculty, leveraging our multi-disciplinary research strengths, and
recruitment of excellent students.”
Stony Brook University
Three programs at Stony Brook University were among the nation’s top 10,
four programs ranked in the top 25, nine ranked in the top 50 and 11 ranked in
the top 100 of their respective categories. Nuclear Physics ranked fourth,
Geometry ranked sixth and Clinical Psychology was ninth.
“It is very
satisfying that the quality of our faculty members and graduate programs have
again been recognized as nationally outstanding,” said Stony Brook University
President Shirley Kenny.
U.S.
News ranks schools
of engineering, business, education, law and medicine based on expert opinion
about program quality and on statistical measures of the quality of a school’s
faculty, research and students.
U.S. News bases its rankings of the other
schools and programs based on the ratings of academic experts. Deans,
program directors and senior faculty are asked to judge the quality of a
particular program on a scale of 1-5, ranging from “marginal” to “outstanding.”
