SUNY 2006-07 Scholar Athlete Awards Announced

Albany -- SUNY Chancellor John R. Ryan today announced the recipients of the 2006-07 Student-Athlete Award, which recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA levels.

Recipients of this year’s award include 78 student athletes from 28 campuses for participation in 25 different sports.  Collectively, these student-athletes have combined outstanding accomplishments in the classroom as well as the playing surface, posting an average GPA of 3.64.

“The Scholar Athlete Award is one of the most selective and prestigious awards bestowed by SUNY, because it speaks to the hard work and dedication our student athletes put forth both in classroom and in their particular sport where they compete throughout the year,” said Chancellor Ryan. “Their success also speaks volumes about the quality of the programs and curriculum that SUNY campuses, coaches, faculty, and staff provide. I commend the recipients as well as their coaches and faculty for this extraordinary achievement.”

Scholar Athletes are selected by the Athletic Directors at each level of play. Region 3 and Region 15 of the NJCAA select recipients for two-year schools; and the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and Athletic Directors from the Independent Institutions select student athletes participating in Division III Programs.

A complete list of the 2006-07 SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar Athletes is available on the SUNY website, at www.suny.edu, under “News and Announcements.”
