Albany – State University of New York Chancellor John R. Ryan today announced that the Jan. 11, 2007 meeting
of the Board of Trustees will be webcast over the Internet, in direct
accordance with Governor Eliot Spitzer's Executive Order #3.
“Leveraging existing
strengths and expertise in technology and distance learning enables SUNY to
broaden public access to its meetings through the Internet. Increasing access
to SUNY meetings will better inform the public about how we educate students,
strengthen economic development, and train New
York’s workforce,” said Ryan. “The more
the public knows about SUNY the stronger will be their support for public
higher education.”
Instructions for accessing
the webcast will be available the morning of Jan. 11 at www.suny.edu.
Governor Spitzer’s Executive
Order #3 directs state agencies and public authorities by March 1, 2007 to
submit a plan that identifies all meetings that are subject to the Open
Meetings Law and a timetable ensuring that all such meetings are broadcast over
the Internet.
“Governor Spitzer’s
leadership for open government is most commendable,” said Ryan. “SUNY is
pleased to have the technological capabilities for webcasting to comply with
the directive and we look forward to being one of the first public meetings to
be webcast."
Following the January meeting
of the Board of Trustees, SUNY will also webcast all future meetings of the
Board as well as standing committees of the Board of Trustees, such as Academic
Standards, Student Life, and Finance and Administration.
The State University of New
York is the largest comprehensive university system in the United States,
educating more than 418,000 students in 7,669 degree and certificate programs
on 64 campuses.
