Albany – The New York State Legislature today passed Governor
Andrew M. Cuomo’s NY SUNY 2020 legislation. Upon the signature of the Governor
this bill will, among many other valuable measures, enact a rational tuition
plan for the State University of New York.
The following statements were offered in support of this critical
reform:
SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden said:
“On behalf of the SUNY Board of Trustees, I want to commend Governor
Cuomo, to whom we owe an enormous debt of gratitude for both his leadership and
his persistence, and the New York State Legislature. They are following the
lead of SUNY’s Student Assembly and Faculty Senate, which identified rational
tuition as the best way to protect the interests of both SUNY and our students.
And we must acknowledge the constructive and creative roles played by Senator
LaValle and Assemblymember Glick, the Chairs of the Higher Education Committees,
and Nancy Zimpher, our tenacious Chancellor. This bill represents a
lifeline for SUNY and gives us a fighting chance to protect access to New
York's great public university and to make it stronger. The SUNY Board of
Trustees will move immediately to implement the action steps authorized by this
groundbreaking legislation.”
SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher said: “Today, Governor
Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature have agreed to historic reform of SUNY’s
long-broken tuition policies. This is a tremendous victory that will not only
allow the State University of New York to flourish, but will finally enable
students and their families to confidently plan for the cost of their
education.
“I fully appreciate that this new policy comes at a challenging
time for students and families – but I want to assure every New Yorker that we
at SUNY pledge to make good on their investment. Every new tuition dollar will
be reinvested in creating the best possible educational experience for our
students, including protecting and enhancing programs, allowing for smaller
class sizes, and better preparing students for greater post-graduate
opportunities.
“A rational tuition policy that is fair, responsible, and
predictable has long been SUNY’s primary legislative goal. With this new policy
in place, SUNY colleges and universities can provide a precise, year-by-year
financial outlook for the duration of a student’s enrollment. The policy also
gives our campuses a steady and reliable stream of revenue to meet SUNY’s
academic mission and become the driver of New York’s economic recovery. Most
importantly, we will be able to do all of this with a continued commitment to
the access and affordability that have become a trademark of a SUNY education.
“Governor Cuomo has shown exemplary and historic leadership on
issues of higher education. I want to commend Senate Majority Leader Skelos;
Speaker Silver; our dedicated higher education chairs, Senator Lavalle and
Assemblymember Glick; and the entire Western New York legislative delegation. This
is responsible public policy that will effectively stabilize the State
University of New York and benefit generations of New Yorkers. It took courage
to stand up and support a rational tuition policy, and for that I applaud them.
“SUNY’s 64 campus presidents have been tireless advocates for
tuition reform, and the elected leadership of SUNY’s faculty and student
governments – specifically Kenneth O’Brien, Julie Gondar, and Kaitlyn Beachner
– has led this effort from the beginning. I want to thank them again for their
strong support.
“Today, the collective efforts of all those who worked so hard to
bring this all-important policy to fruition have been rewarded with legislation
that will make a real difference in the lives of SUNY students, their families,
and citizens throughout New York State.”
~~~
SUNY Student Assembly President Kaitlyn Beachner said:
“SUNY students should be happy and grateful for the
support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature and for their
willingness to bring the student's voice to Albany. Three years ago students
from across the state came together to pass a resolution through the SUNY
Student Assembly, supporting a rational tuition plan so that students
and their families could finally have the ability to accurately predict the
costs associated with higher education in the SUNY system. A
rational tuition plan will continue the tradition of quality and
accessible higher education in the State University of New York system. We
thank the Governor and the Legislature for coming together on this vital
tuition legislation that will benefit the current and future students
of SUNY.”
SUNY Faculty Senate President
Kenneth P. O’Brien said: “The SUNY University Faculty Senate, which has long endorsed
the principles of a rational tuition policy, is deeply gratified that the
current political leadership has resolved the tuition issue for New York's
public universities for the next five years. This landmark agreement
will provide the funds necessary for both continued educational excellence
across SUNY and the fiscal certainty necessary for effective planning by
both students (and their families) and our campuses. Our appreciation
for this difficult decision is extended to the Governor and his staff, to the
political leaders in both houses and of both parties, to the members of the
SUNY Student Assembly and to the SUNY administrators and members of the Board
of Trustees who have successfully advocated for this policy.”
SUNY Adirondack President Ronald C. Heacock said:
“The SUNY Adirondack community strongly supports and looks forward to the new
rational tuition policy and the stability it will bring to our four-year system
institutions, especially our on-campus partner, SUNY Plattsburgh. We
appreciate the hard work and dedication that went into this groundbreaking
reform and its long-term commitment to keep higher education
in New York affordable and accessible for all residents.”
University at Albany President George M. Philip said:
“UAlbany applauds Governor Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Skelos, Assembly
Speaker Silver, SUNY Chancellor Zimpher and our entire Capital Region
Legislative Delegation for their vision, leadership and commitment in
championing this critically important tuition reform for the State University
of New York. With rational tuition, the University at Albany and SUNY
campuses across the State will be able to enhance their academic and research
enterprise, while ensuring that access and affordability are protected for all
students in pursuit of a SUNY education. For the first time in SUNY
history, students and families will no longer be subjected to sudden and
dramatic tuition increases. Through this pioneering reform, UAlbany will
be able to strengthen the academic and student experience, foster new research,
innovation and discovery, and spur economic growth for a stronger and more
vibrant Capital Region and Empire State.”
Alfred State College President John Anderson said:
“Passage of the rational tuition plan will be a boon to New York State, the
State University of New York, and most importantly, to us in this region, to
Alfred State College. I want to express my gratitude to Chancellor Zimpher,
Gov. Cuomo, and the Legislature for their support of SUNY and their recognition
of SUNY’s needs. This new plan will allow current and prospective students
and their families to better budget for higher educational costs by avoiding
unexpected tuition spikes, and will afford campuses a steady revenue stream to
allow them to plan more effectively for their programming and physical plant
needs.”
Binghamton University President C. Peter Magrath said:
“We thank Governor Cuomo and Chancellor Zimpher, as well as our legislative
leaders for their commitment to the NYSUNY2020 plan and their support for a
rational tuition and tuition plus program. The rational tuition and tuition
‘plus’ program is crucial to the expansion of our educational mission. By
delivering substantial resources to the campus, the program will improve access
to Binghamton’s high-quality education for thousands of New Yorkers, and it
will position the University and our partners to reinvigorate the state’s
economy through innovation and job creation.”
College at Brockport President John R. Halstead said:
“We are gratified that the Governor and the Legislature were able to reach an
agreement on a tuition plan for the State University of New York. Attaining a
rational tuition plan was our top priority. I would also like to thank
Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and her team for tirelessly advocating with us on SUNY’s
behalf. This major reform will allow students and parents to better plan for
the cost of their education while providing The College at Brockport with a
more predictable revenue stream. This will enable the College to re-evaluate
some of our previously frozen critical positions. We’ll also invest in programs
and services to assure an even more robust educational experience for our
students.”
Broome Community College President Kevin E. Drumm said:
“We want to thank the Governor and legislators for recognizing the need to help
maintain SUNY’s high quality through a rational and predictable tuition
policy.”
Buffalo State College President Aaron
Podolefsky said: “Buffalo State would like to thank
Governor Andrew Cuomo, legislative leaders, and the entire Western New York
delegation for bringing a much-needed rational tuition policy to the State
University of New York. Buffalo State is committed to providing today’s
students access to a quality higher education experience. This responsible
tuition plan ensures we will be able to continue to fulfill that commitment,
while also giving our students the predictability they deserve in order to plan
for the future.”
University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi said: “I
am heartened by the news coming from Albany today and I remain hopeful that the
agreement between Speaker Silver, Majority Leader Skelos and Governor Cuomo
will be enacted into law as soon as possible. The entire University at
Buffalo community is incredibly appreciative of the steadfast support shown to
us by Governor Cuomo, the Western New York delegation, Senate and Assembly
leadership and other supporters who are moving Buffalo Niagara’s collective
vision for the future forward.”
SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy said:
“The adoption of the rational tuition plan will contribute greatly to our
ability to maintain the high-quality, career-driven education we provide at
SUNY Canton. I applaud Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the state legislative leaders
for addressing our concerns about the much-needed tuition reform within the
State University of New York. The State of New York is the ultimate beneficiary
of this important piece of legislation, as we will be able to better prepare
more students for employment and entrepreneurial ventures immediately following
graduation.”
Cayuga Community College President Daniel P. Larson said:
“The agreement between the Governor and the Legislature on rational tuition
will provide SUNY schools with a steady revenue stream, in the face of dramatic
changes in state funding. More importantly, the decision will ultimately help
students and their families plan for tuition increases and avoid dramatic
spikes in tuition costs from one year to the next.”
Clinton Community College President John E. Jablonski said: “I
support the proposed rational tuition policy for SUNY. It will help to
strengthen the entire State University System. It will also help students and
parents anticipate the cost of tuition from their freshman through their senior
year.”
SUNY Cobleskill President Donald P. Zingale said:
“It’s heartening that the support for a rational tuition policy mirrors the
diversity that is the State of New York. I credit Governor Cuomo and other
legislative leaders for recognizing the will of the people.”
Columbia-Greene Community College James
Campion said: “A compressive and predictable tuition policy will be of
real value to our students and their families. Traditionally, the top transfer
destinations for Columbia-Greene Community College¹s graduates have been SUNY
institutions, and the Governor and members of the Legislature have done them a
great service with their support of this new policy.”
Corning Community College President Floyd F.
Amann said: “The students attending SUNY’s community
colleges will benefit from a rationale tuition policy upon transfer. This plan
is advantageous for all sectors of the State University of New York.”
SUNY Cortland President Erik J. Bitterbaum said: “The new tuition policy balances the strengthened resources
SUNY Cortland needs to continue providing a high-quality college education with
our commitment to keep the Cortland educational experience affordable for all
students. I thank the State Legislature
and Gov. Andrew Cuomo for having the foresight to ensure a stable stream of
increasing revenues during a time of uncertainty for public higher education.
Because of the rational tuition policy, SUNY Cortland can plan for continued
excellence while the families of prospective students can develop long-term
plans for covering the cost of higher education. It truly is a win for the
College, its students, the Cortland region and New York State as a whole.”
SUNY Delhi President Candace Vancko said:
“This is great news for students and their families, and I applaud Governor Cuomo
and legislators for adopting a tuition plan that is long overdue
and badly needed. It addresses one of the biggest financial variables that
families face and will allow them to plan and budget the cost of a SUNY
education for their sons and daughters. It will also provide the campuses
with tuition revenues they need to ensure student access to the courses
they need to graduate on time.”
SUNY Downstate Medical Center President John C. LaRosa said:
“To ensure the quality and affordability of higher education in New York State,
and to make certain it is available for underserved communities, there must be
a predictable source of revenue for the State University system. This rational
tuition plan will make it easier for students and families to set educational
goals. We thank Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature for their leadership
in helping to meet these objectives.”
SUNY Empire State College President Alan R. Davis said: “I
commend Governor Cuomo, Leader Skelos, Speaker Silver, Education Committee Chairs
LaValle and Glick, and all the members of the state Legislature who worked to
reach agreement on this historic action. It is a long-overdue reform that
ensures for students including those adult learners studying at Empire
State College locations across the state access to a quality SUNY education.”
SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry President
Cornelius B. Murphy, Jr. said: “We at ESF are very pleased the
Governor and Legislature understand — and acted upon — the urgent need for a
rational tuition policy," said Cornelius B. Murphy, Jr., president of the
SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. "It will help
ensure the quality of the education that we offer while providing our students
and their families with predictable tuition costs. Our students will be more
likely to complete their degree requirements in a timely fashion so they can
take the lead in improving our world. New York's elected leaders just took a
big step in helping those students prepare for the challenge.”
Erie Community College President Jack Quinn said: “The benefits of the rational tuition plan are good for
parents, and they are good for SUNY. Rational tuition will allow parents
to better plan for tuition expenses, and it will give institutions a better way
to plan within their budget processes. I applaud both the Governor and the
state’s legislative leaders for their hard work on tuition reform, it has been
a long road and I appreciate their efforts.”
Farmingdale State College President W. Hubert Keen said: “I
congratulate Chancellor Zimpher and Governor Cuomo. I thank our legislators and
appreciate how hard they worked, especially Senator Lavalle, to make this plan
a reality. The rational tuition plan will allow our students and their families
to plan for their college costs while bringing much needed resources to the
campuses. At Farmingdale, this infusion will mean greater access for qualified
students and the ability to provide excellent student services.”
Fashion Institute of Technology President Joyce F. Brown said:
“Governor Cuomo and the Legislature have shown great vision in enacting this
critical commitment to students who attend New York’s state colleges and
universities. Providing a predictable funding stream will allow SUNY to make
strategic investments throughout the state. These will maintain and enhance the
high-caliber public education that is key to New York's economic development.”
Finger Lakes Community College President Barbara Risser said:
“FLCC fully supports the rational tuition plan for four-year SUNY schools. Many
of our students choose FLCC and then transfer to a four-year SUNY school due to
the affordable tuition at both institutions. Small, predictable increases are
easier for families to manage than a large one-time increase. We are pleased
that the Governor and Legislature have addressed this critical issue.”
SUNY Fredonia President Dennis L. Hefner said:
“Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and its leaders deserve
credit for agreeing to this much-needed ration approach to tuition. Future
historians of the State University of New York will recognize this successful
effort as one of the pivotal junctures in the history of public higher
education. Elimination of tuition uncertainty not only aids SUNY’s
efforts to plan effectively and serve as an economic engine for the state, but
also guarantees future SUNY students access to a quality public higher
education system.”
Genesee Community College President Stuart Steiner said: “I
was very pleased to learn that a five-year rational tuition plan for SUNY may
soon become a reality. This will be a useful planning tool for both our State
University system and campus leadership throughout SUNY. I was also pleased
that the plan makes provision for assisting our neediest students, and ensuring
they continue to have full access to our world-class university system. For the
community colleges, it will hopefully mean that baccalaureate colleges will
have the increased capacity to serve the growing numbers of community college
graduates who will be transferring with junior year status.”
SUNY Geneseo President Christopher C. Dahl said:
“Approval of this tuition plan is very good news for SUNY and the students we
serve, and I applaud the Governor and legislative leaders for their
perseverance in bringing this important measure to fruition. A rational tuition
plan makes great sense for everyone interested in a high quality and affordable
system of higher education in New York. It is a wise investment in the future
of our state.”
Herkimer Community College President Ann
Marie Murray said: “I applaud Governor Cuomo and our
legislative leaders for making SUNY’s rational tuition plan a reality. This
plan will allow students to anticipate tuition costs allowing them to make
informed decisions regarding their educational futures.”
Hudson Valley Community College President Drew Matonak said:
“For students at Hudson Valley Community College and community colleges across
the state, the passage of a rational tuition policy protects access to higher
education by stabilizing tuition increases and allowing students and their
families to plan for long-term college costs. We salute the Governor and
legislative leaders for moving forward with a plan that, during difficult
times, makes economic sense for our students and the taxpayers of New York
State.”
Jamestown Community College President Gregory T. DeCinque said:
“We appreciate the collaborative efforts of SUNY and our state leaders to
create a rational tuition plan that will maintain and enhance the strengths of
New York.”
Jefferson Community College President Carol
A. McCoy said: “Jefferson Community College is appreciative of all efforts
by the Governor and Legislature to strengthen SUNY 4 year colleges and
universities with a rational tuition plan. Our students rely on New York’s
public upper division colleges for transfer opportunities and having a
predictable and affordable tuition encourages students to further their education.”
SUNY Maritime College President John Craine said:
“We are tremendously grateful and appreciative of the agreement between
Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders for rational tuition. The plan is
critical to SUNY Maritime College being able to continue to provide the
educational programs our students need to graduate on time, and for the College
to remain relevant in meeting the maritime and national security needs of the
Nation as well as the State of New York.”
Mohawk Valley Community College President
Randall J. VanWagoner said: “On behalf of Mohawk
Valley Community College, I’d like to express our grateful appreciation to
Governor Cuomo and the leadership of the New York State Legislature for passing
this much needed ‘rational tuition’ reform legislation. This action addresses a
host of issues that are faced annually by SUNY, its students and their
families. Most MVCC graduates continue their higher education by transferring
to a SUNY college or university. Because of this legislation, SUNY will be able
to provide a stable revenue source in the face of reduced state support, while
protecting students by maintaining modest and affordable tuition. MVCC
graduates transferring to SUNY institutions will now be able to plan to pay the
cost of their education in a much more effective manner and – for that – we are
thankful.”
Monroe Community College President Anne M.
Kress said: “A rational, predictable tuition plan for SUNY’s
state-operated campuses holds great value for the system’s community college
students, many of whom transfer to another SUNY campus and expect the same
quality there that they enjoyed in their first two years. This agreement
reached by legislative leaders and the Governor ensures New Yorkers have access
to a quality education at a price they can anticipate. For that, we are deeply
grateful.”
Morrisville State College Interim President
Richard J. Carreno said: “I want to thank Governor Cuomo and our legislators for supporting
a rational and predictable tuition plan for SUNY. The reform insures that all
residents of New York state will have access to a quality higher education
experience and allow SUNY to continue and thrive as a vital economic engine for
the state.”
Nassau Community College President Donald P. Astrab said: “An
essential component of our State's future growth is the ability to provide
access to higher education to all of its citizens. This is especially true for
those who choose to attend community colleges and after graduating elect to
transfer to four year SUNY institutions. The plan put forth by the Governor and
legislative leaders will stabilize tuition increases and it will create a sense
of calm as students formulate their next steps towards attending college.”
SUNY New Paltz President Donald P. Christian said: “I
am delighted by the leadership of the Governor and the Legislature in
supporting long-overdue reform of how tuition is set in New York State. This is
a historic day for SUNY and for SUNY students and their families, who will be
able to plan for their educational expenses with this rational tuition policy.
At New Paltz, this additional revenue will let us hire full-time faculty to
teach the courses students need to graduate in a timely fashion, and will let
us increase aid to make sure that all New Yorkers continue to have access to a
New Paltz degree and education.”
Niagara Community College President James P. Klyczek said: “I
am very supportive of rational tuition – it makes good sense as an educational
administrator and it makes good sense as a parent. As a college administrator
it allows for good planning in being able to carry out our academic programs
and as a parent I am able to help my daughter plan her finances as she pursues
her degree at the University of Buffalo.”
North Country Community College President Carol Brown said:
“The plan for a rationale tuition plan will continue to ensure the ability of
Community college students to seamlessly pursue their educational goals.”
SUNY
College at Old Westbury President Calvin O. Butts, III said:
“Governor Cuomo, Senator Lavalle and all of our legislative leaders must be
commended for creating a tuition plan that provides for excellence while
keeping higher education accessible for all who choose a SUNY education.
Predictable tuition will allow Old Westbury students and their families to
manage the costs of college and to better plan for their futures. Even with the
increases outlined in this policy, the tuition for SUNY institutions will
continue in the system's tradition of affordability. At the same time, the
increased tuition revenue will allow us to hire needed faculty and staff to
teach and serve the record number of students on our campus.”
SUNY Oneonta President Nancy Kleniewski said: “Tuition
reform is welcome news for both current and future SUNY Oneonta students and
their families. I'm thankful to Senator Jim Seward, whose district includes
several state campuses, for leading the effort in the Legislature to make this
critical initiative a reality. I also appreciate Governor Andrew Cuomo's
support, which will continue to be essential as SUNY increasingly focuses on
becoming New York's economic engine.”
SUNY College of Optometry President David A. Heath said:
“We are grateful to Governor Cuomo and the Legislature for their agreement
on a rational tuition policy for SUNY. We appreciate their pragmatic approach
and long-range planning initiatives which will allow our students to better
financially plan their futures as they prepare to enter the profession of
Optometry.”
Orange County Community College President William Richards said: “I
commend the leadership, vision and guidance of Chancellor Zimpher, Governor
Cuomo and the Legislature for recognizing the need for a rational tuition plan
within SUNY, and for formulating a plan that will strengthen our University
system at all levels statewide.”
SUNY Oswego President Deborah Stanley said:
“SUNY has long been a great value and, thanks to the insightful and
groundbreaking leadership of Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders, it will
remain an important asset for our state's citizens. The bipartisan legislative
solution passed today maintains tuition at one of the lowest levels in the
nation and will also insure academic excellence now and into the future. In the
end this is a huge benefit for our students and their families.”
SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling said:
“We are grateful to the Governor and Legislature for spearheading the
efforts toward tuition reform. Our campuses -- and our students and their
families -- have long needed a rational tuition program, one that will allow
them to plan for the future and that will allow us to continue to provide a
high-quality, accessible program to the citizens of this state.”
SUNY Potsdam President John F. Schwaller said: “We thank the Governor and Legislature for coming to this
agreement. Rational tuition must become part of the standard practice of SUNY
and the State of New York in order to allow families to plan effectively for
college costs. At the same time, SUNY Potsdam is dedicated to providing a
quality education at a reasonable cost to the students of New York. Access
should not be determined on the basis of income.”
Purchase College President Thomas J. Schwarz said: “We
commend Governor Cuomo, Majority Leader Skelos, and Speaker Silver and thank
them for their leadership in recognizing the needs of SUNY faculty and
students. For years, Purchase College has advocated for a rational tuition plan
that will allow for the College as well as students and their families to
better anticipate the costs of education. This level of transparency is crucial
to careful planning, regardless of income level. This agreement is an important
benchmark of fiscal prudence and efficiency for all New Yorkers.”
Rockland Community College President Cliff L. Wood said:
“Although the rational tuition plan does not directly affect tuition rates at
community colleges, this plan would ultimately benefit students and their
parents on all our campuses and throughout our state. Since the majority of
community college students transfer to four-year colleges, with SUNY four-year
campuses the leading transfer destination, the rational tuition plan will
enable families to engage in responsible fiscal planning for higher education.
It will ensure continued access to the quality education offered by both the
two-year and four-year colleges across the SUNY system. We applaud the elected
officials and SUNY leaders who came together to bring this measure to
fruition.”
Schenectady County Community College President Quintin B. Bullock said:
“We are delighted to learn of Governor Cuomo and the Legislature’s support of a
Rational Tuition Plan. This support will not only result in furthering the high
quality of our four-year SUNYs but will also raise the level of excellence at
the state’s two-year campuses, including Schenectady County Community College,
that are partnered with SUNY’s four-year colleges and universities.”
Stony
Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley, Jr. said:
“The passage of NYSUNY 2020 marks an historic moment in that for the first time
in recent memory, Stony Brook will be able plan for the future without
projecting cuts and will be able to invest in the academic and research
programs on campus. Governor Cuomo’s far-reaching vision and leadership to move
this initiative forward has been courageous and unparalleled; Senate Majority
Leader Skelos, Assembly Speaker Silver and the entire State Legislature have
also shown tremendous foresight around the issue of supporting a quality public
higher education for the people of New York. Chancellor Zimpher’s dedication
and advocacy has been integral to this process and she is also to be commended.
This legislation should help Stony Brook University fulfill its academic and
research mission, its community and healthcare mission, and its mission for
regional economic development. We express our deepest gratitude to Governor
Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Skelos, Assembly Speaker Silver and the entire
State Legislature for a bill that is absolutely transformative – for our
students and faculty, and for Long Island.”
SUNY Sullivan President Mamie Howard-Golladay said: “I
join the SUNY Sullivan community and the other SUNY Colleges and Universities
in extending our thanks to Gov. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature for
the positive step they’ve taken in assuring the residents of the state that a
quality education at a reasonable cost will make it possible for all New
Yorkers to reap the benefits of a college education.”
SUNY IT President Bjong Wolf Yeigh said:
“Governor Cuomo, Speaker Silver and Majority Leader Skelos are to be commended
for reaching consensus on tuition reform, and all who have supported this
long-overdue move to rational tuition deserve our thanks. This agreement means
we will be able to continue to strive to fulfill SUNY’s commitment to
affordable, accessible, quality education for our students; research, and
service to the people of the State of New York.“
Tompkins Cortland Community College President Carl E. Haynes said:
“I’m very pleased the Governor and Legislature have reached this agreement on
tuition reform. I firmly believe this measure will be a great benefit for our
sister SUNY campuses, and by extension, the SUNY system as a whole. Everyone
involved in making this plan a reality has helped SUNY, and New York State,
take an important step forward.”
SUNY Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith said:
“We commend the state Legislature today for its support of a rational tuition
policy for the state university. This policy enables New York’s public
colleges, universities and academic medical centers to remain accessible and
affordable while ensuring students of a high quality education. This bold
legislation also presents students and their families with a financial road map
to better plan for a higher education path in the state university system.”
Westchester Community College President Joseph Hankin said: “This
is positive news. It will mean that our students, many of whom go on to
four-year SUNY colleges and universities, will be aware of how much their
education will cost… to the penny. It will give them, and their parents, a much
better sense of the true cost of a SUNY education. I would like to thank the
Governor, members of the Legislature, and the chancellor for working together
on this issue.”
Levin Institute President Garrick Utley said: “I
applaud and congratulate the Governor and the Legislature for taking this
important step on tuition, and SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher for her successful
advocacy efforts. This will benefit students and their families who will have
greater clarity as they make their financial plans for attending a SUNY campus.
It will also benefit students by allowing SUNY to continue the level of
excellent higher education that the State University must maintain for the sake
of New York and its economic revitalization.”
