Plattsburgh - As part of a comprehensive effort to put The State
University of New York at the forefront of New York’s economic revitalization,
Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher will lead a broad discussion on “quality of place”
at the sixth of eight statewide conversations on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 as part
of the system’s strategic planning
process.
Two hundred stakeholders from
across the state, including the public, policymakers, SUNY parents, students,
legislators, community and business leaders, faculty and alumni, will
convene at SUNY Plattsburgh to engage
in the theme of “Quality
of Place.” Preceding the conversation, there will be an open
forum where those interested in the future of SUNY can attend and provide
testimony.
The day will feature keynote
speaker Ira
Harkavy, associate vice president and founding
director of the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships, University of Pennsylvania. He will explore what it means to talk about “quality of
place” in the context of the campus community engagement movement, where that
movement currently stands, and where it is going.
“Quality of Place” as a theme
will focus on taking a close look at how SUNY can connect with its diverse
communities. Possible avenues include using knowledge and skills to promote
safe and livable neighborhoods, stable housing, and thriving workplaces. Up for
consideration will be how SUNY can help make communities stronger and more
resilient – the kinds of places that attract the very brightest, and keep that
talent in New York.
Leading up to the
conversation, SUNY’s social media initiative, “Generation SUNY,” has made
available two items:
On YouTube,
SUNY Interim Senior Vice Chancellor and Provost David Lavallee discusses the
role SUNY can play in improving New York’s “quality of place.”
On Facebook, Morrisville
State College President Raymond Cross blogs about the subject in his piece “SUNY Stands Ready
to Improve New York’s Quality of Place.”
Media interested in attending
the conversation should contact in advance for further information. Attached is
a general agenda for the event.
