Statement on the Retirement of Binghamton University President Lois B. DeFleur

Binghamton – After 19 years of service as president of Binghamton University, Lois B

 

Binghamton – After 19 years of service as president of Binghamton University, Lois B. DeFleur this morning announced her retirement. DeFleur informed SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, SUNY Board of Trustees Chair Carl Hayden, and Binghamton University Council Chair Kathryn Madigan that she will step down July 30, 2010 as she changes course to focus on her family and personal life.

 

During her time at Binghamton, DeFleur has created a highly regarded academic institution that New Yorkers can be proud of. Consistently achieving high rankings in all major publications, Under DeFleur’s leadership, Binghamton has defined itself as a leader in research, innovation and undergraduate education. A true visionary, DeFleur has helped to transform Binghamton University both physically, with several major construction projects, as well as institutionally, with the introduction of new professional degree programs among many other academic achievements.

 

Over the years, Chancellor Zimpher and President DeFleur have worked together in several national associations of college and university presidents and have called on universities to increase their community engagement.

 

“I can attest to the esteem in which President DeFleur is held by her national colleagues, and have seen first hand how DeFleur’s advocacy at the national level for excellence in higher education has translated perfectly to the reality she and her team have created at Binghamton University,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “Her contributions to SUNY over the past 19 years will be long-lasting, and I wish her the best of luck in her future as she takes time to be with her family.”
