Binghamton – After 19 years of service as
president of Binghamton University, Lois B. DeFleur this morning announced her retirement. DeFleur
informed SUNY
Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher,
SUNY Board of Trustees Chair Carl Hayden, and Binghamton University Council
Chair Kathryn Madigan that she will step down July 30, 2010 as she changes course to focus on her family and personal
life.
During her
time at Binghamton, DeFleur has created a highly
regarded academic institution that New Yorkers can be proud of. Consistently
achieving high rankings in all major publications, Under DeFleur’s leadership, Binghamton has defined itself as a leader in
research, innovation and undergraduate education. A true visionary, DeFleur has
helped to transform Binghamton University both physically, with several major construction projects,
as well as institutionally, with the introduction of new professional degree
programs among many other academic achievements.
Over the
years, Chancellor Zimpher and President DeFleur have worked together in several
national associations of college and university presidents and have called on
universities to increase their community engagement.
“I can
attest to the esteem in which President DeFleur is held by her national
colleagues, and have seen first hand how DeFleur’s advocacy at the national
level for excellence in higher education has translated perfectly to the
reality she and her team have created at Binghamton University,” said
Chancellor Zimpher. “Her contributions to SUNY over the past 19 years will be
long-lasting, and I wish her the best of luck in her future as she takes time
to be with her family.”
