Since 1991, we have helped SUNY campuses obtain access to the Internet. While most of the largest institutions have always handled this on their own, the majority of the campuses have used our Internet services to make access simpler, more effective and less expensive. Before we began our current service, SUNYNet ISP (see below), which gives campuses direct links to the Internet, we offered shared access to NYSERNet. These Gateways, as we called them, were an inexpensive entry into the Internet that worked well for over two thirds of the SUNY campuses. For an historic description of the Gateways, click here.

Our current service is called SUNYNet ISP. This form of direct access to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) does not offer significant technical differences or advantages over other forms of Internet access, but it does give subscribers an ally in planning, ordering, and then living with an Internet service. It both simplifies and strengthens the subscribers' day-to-day experience with their ISP.

The service consists of one or more direct links between the subscriber and one or more SUNYNet-approved ISPs. The links terminate at the subscriber's end in a SUNYNet-approved router. Our ISP is AT&T. We can design the Internet service to be closely integrated with the SUNYNet (intranet) service or completely separate from it, depending on the LAN and WAN networking requirements of the subscriber.
