SUNYNet Customized Networking
Sometimes neither the standard Intranet nor the Internet is the right choice for an application. This can arise from the need to communicate using older, or non-IP protocols, such as DECNet or IBM's SNA. Or, the need can be for newer protocols or features that do not operate on the general Internet and that we cannot make operational at this time on our intranet, such as multicast IP.To serve all aspects of the diverse University system, we offer customized links that ride outside of the standard intranet and Internet. When we do this, we still consider these lines and services to be part of SUNYNet.
For example, we have created a sub-network especially for Empire State College that interconnects their nine regional sites with the home site in Saratoga. Also, we have used this service to support the our own U-wide application in videoconferencing, UVCS.
