Alexander Mayer

Alexander MayerAlex works in MDRC’s higher education policy area. He directs projects, leads the design of evaluations and the analysis of student outcomes, and helps with outreach to policymakers, practitioners, and other stakeholders in higher education. Alex is currently MDRC’s project director for the Center for the Analysis of Postsecondary Readiness, a national center to study developmental (remedial) education, funded by the Institute for Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education. He is also MDRC’s project director on an evaluation of the Integrated Planning and Advising for Student Success (iPASS) project, an initiative to integrate data, technology, and holistic advising funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and he was previously project director for the evaluation of the Achieving the Dream initiative. Alex is a lead researcher on Aid Like A Paycheck, the New Mathways Project, a national survey of two- and four- year colleges, and has served similar roles on the Performance-Based Scholarship Demonstration and the Behavioral Interventions to Advance Self-Sufficiency project sponsored by the Administration for Families and Children of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to joining MDRC, Alex cofounded and led a small nonprofit organization for public schools in San Francisco and also worked as a software engineer and consultant. He holds a BS with double majors in physics and mathematics from the College of William and Mary and a PhD in political science from the University of California, Davis.
