Albany – President Barack Obama spoke this week at the University of Texas at Austin, expressing his vision for the future of higher education in the United States. Issuing a call for 8 million additional college graduates by the year 2020, Obama spoke of higher education as the engine for economic revitalization in the U.S.

“Education is the economic issue of our time,” said President Obama, citing previous educational incentives such as the G.I. Bill as modern examples of how education can be used to revitalize a troubled economy.

SUNY’s strategic plan, The Power of SUNY, echoes many of the initiatives President Obama cited as vital to our nation’s resilience, such as creating a cradle-to-career pipeline to ensure each student graduates ready to join an evolving workforce.

“I couldn’t agree more with President Obama—higher education can jump-start the nation’s economy by producing graduates who are ready to compete and succeed in the global market,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “I am excited to see the president’s plan as we move forward with The Power of SUNY.”
