Albany – State University of New York Interim Chancellor Dr. John B. Clark today commended 14 SUNY campuses for their
inclusion in President George W. Bush’s 2007 Higher Education Community Service
Honor Roll.
Binghamton
University; Buffalo State College; Hudson Valley Community College; the
University at Buffalo; SUNY Old Westbury; SUNY ESF; SUNY Cortland; SUNY Delhi
SUNY New Paltz;
SUNY Oswego and SUNY Oneonta were among more than 500 institutions of higher
education across the nation to make the list.
In addition, three SUNY campuses were among 127 to be recognized with
distinction. They are: SUNY Geneseo, where more than 3,600 students
volunteered took part in such programs as hurricane recovery in Mississippi and
raking leaves for elders in the community; SUNY Potsdam, where projects revolve
around a theme of working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances; and Stony
Brook University, where students, faculty and staff spent more than 30,600
hours serving local and national communities through activities that both
addressed and raised awareness for issues such as: homelessness, hunger,
literacy, at risk youth, education and dropout prevention, heath and nutrition,
senior citizen services, and services for those with special needs.
“Whether
SUNY students are volunteering and sponsoring programs in the local community
or crossing state and national borders to lend a helping hand, efforts made by
these 14 campuses and others in the country to help where help is needed is
highly commendable,” said Clark. "SUNY students, faculty and staff have a
long tradition of service to their communities and this national recognition is
much appreciated."
Launched
in 2006, the President’s Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education
that support innovative, effective, and exemplary community service programs.
Honorees for the various award levels were selected based on a series of
factors, including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of
student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the
extent to which the school offers service-learning courses.
The Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation for National Community
Service, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the Department of
Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps,
Campus Compact, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
Liz Seale, Chief Operating Officer of the Corporation for National and
Community Service, announced the awards at the annual meeting of the American
Council on Education, saying, “College students are tackling the toughest
problems in America, demonstrating their compassion, commitment, and creativity
in by serving as mentors, tutors, health workers, and even engineers. They
represent a renewed spirit of civic engagement fostered by outstanding
leadership on caring campuses.”
