SUNY Board of Trustees and Community Colleges Announce Presidential Appointments

Jefferson, Rockland, and Tompkins Cortland Community College Campuses to Welcome New Leadership

Garden City – The State University of New York Board of Trustees, together with the respective boards at Jefferson, Rockland, and Tompkins Cortland Community Colleges today announced the following presidential appointments.

Jefferson Community College, Dr. Ty A. Stone

Dr. Stone has held senior executive level positions at Sinclair Community College, the third largest community college in Ohio, for the past eight years. She currently serves as the vice president for strategic initiatives, a position designed to advance the college’s master plan, establish public/private partnerships, and deliver immediate results in several key areas including enrollment management. Under Dr. Stone’s leadership, the “Enrollment by Design” initiative was created in which groups of students, faculty, and staff were engaged to identify issues contributing to the institution’s enrollment challenges.

Dr. Stone’s experience in higher education also includes teaching experience as an assistant professor and project director at Central State University in Ohio. Additionally, Dr. Stone is a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, where she served as an air traffic controller.

Dr. Stone earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Columbia Union College, a Master of Business Administration in organizational strategy from Trinity University, and a Doctorate degree in organization and management from Capella University.

Her appointment is effective July 1, 2017, at an annual salary of $175,000.

Rockland Community College, Dr. Michael A. Baston

Dr. Baston has held executive leadership positions at LaGuardia Community College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system, overseeing programs to enhance academic, personal, and social success of more than 50,000 students. Most recently, Dr. Baston has served as acting provost and vice president for academic and student affairs, where he led the largest student affairs portfolio of any CUNY college. At LaGuardia, he also served as associate provost and associate dean for student affairs and enrollment management.

Dr. Baston is an Aspen Presidential Fellow for Community College Excellence and an executive leader recognized nationally for innovative practices and student outcomes, and for his work in the field of student success. An American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Pathways coach supporting the leadership teams at St. Petersburg College, Broward College, Indian River State College, and Tallahassee Community College in Florida, Dr. Baston is helping institutions build capacity as they seek to use guided pathways as a framework to integrate student success strategies.

Dr. Baston earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Iona College, a Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School, and an Education Doctorate in executive leadership from St. John Fisher College.

His appointment is effective July 1, 2017, at an annual salary of $225,000.

Tompkins Cortland Community College, Dr. Orinthia T. Montague

Dr. Orinthia T. Montague has been a leader in higher education for the past 18 years. She currently serves as the vice president of student affairs and chief diversity officer at Normandale Community College, the largest community college within the Minnesota State system. In this capacity, Dr. Montague provides leadership, vision, and outcomes that foster student access, persistence, and completion. She also serves as the chief presidential advisor for the implementation of student-related policy and procedures. Prior to serving as vice president, Dr. Montague was the dean of students with responsibility for strategic planning, facility planning, and continuous improvement of student services. She also facilitated partnerships with internal and external communities.

Before joining Normandale, Dr. Montague was the director of student life, assistant vice provost, and associate vice provost and dean of students at the University of Missouri at St. Louis.

Dr. Montague received a Bachelor of Arts in interpersonal communication form Truman State University, a Master of Arts in counseling from Lindenwood University, and a Doctorate degree in higher education administration from the University of Missouri.      

Her appointment is effective July 5, 2017, at an annual salary of $170,000.
