ICYMI: Citizens Budget Commission Endorses Extension of NYSUNY 2020

March 23, 2016

New York City – A renewal of NYSUNY 2020, legislation that gives the SUNY Board of Trustees the authority to set tuition, received an endorsement this week by the Citizens Budget Commission (CBC), a nonpartisan, nonprofit, civic organization devoted to improving the finances and services of New York City and State governments.

In a published analysis titled, "The Rational Funding Plan for SUNY and CUNY Should Be Extended," the CBC concludes:

"Extending the SUNY 2020 and CUNY 2020 Program for another five years would extend tuition predictability and the state’s requirement to maintain public support, while maintaining New York’s competitive position. Failure to do so creates the possibility that SUNY and CUNY students could again be exposed to irrational and unpredictable tuition fluctuations, harming students, SUNY, and CUNY."

Governor Cuomo included a renewal of NYSUNY 2020 in his executive budget. It also has the support of shared governance leaders throughout SUNY, elected student and faculty leaders in the Student Assembly, University Faculty Senate, and Faculty Council of Community Colleges.

NYSUNY 2020 also received editorial support from Newsday and the Times Union, following this op-ed published by the SUNY Board of Trustees.
