Chancellor's Top 10
The Chancellor's Top 10 Lessons learned on the 64-Campus Tour:
#10 SUNY is comprehensive! From big to small, from urban to rural, from community, technical and comprehensive colleges to independent colleges, research centers and medical schools - the SUNY system offers unparalleled variety and choice among campuses and educational environments.
#9 Our beautiful campus grounds. The grounds on each of the 64 campuses reflect an extraordinary level of physical beauty, attesting that they've been maintained and nurtured over time with attention and skill.
#8 The extreme contrasts among physical plants and properties. Some buildings and facilities are in excellent condition. Others need more attention. But our campuses represent a remarkable assemblage of classrooms, athletic facilities, museums, residence halls, quads, plazas, and gathering places both formal and informal - for the use and enjoyment of our students and communities.
#7 The diversity of our program offerings. From culinary arts to veterinary medicine, from nanoscale engineering to midwifery, the incredible programs offered on SUNY campuses respond to every educational need and are tightly linked to the employment needs and opportunities of our local communities and our state.
#6 Resourcefulness in adapting to current challenges. On every campus, creative people are improvising in order to meet changing demands during tough economic times: transforming facilities, adapting programs, teaching and working harder and smarter.
#5 A student-centered system. This is #5 because our students are at the center of everything we do. Students are enrolling on our campuses in record numbers, and they're coming to SUNY because they want to be here - for our high quality education, affordability, and accessibility.
#4 Remarkable faculty and staff. For the thousands of people who work at SUNY, whether full or part-time staff, academic or support, it's more than a job - it's a way of life. They are smart, innovative, committed to higher education, and dedicated to the students they serve.
#3 A strong sense of community. There's nothing impersonal about being at SUNY. At SUNY you're part of something greater: an educational mission, a communal sense of purpose, a campus, a team, a family. Within academic and athletic programs, on individual campuses, from generation to generation, the affiliations are deep and lasting.
#2 SUNY campuses are tied to our communities. Whether your campus is in a small town or a large city, there's a sense of extension beyond the traditional campus boundaries into the communities, the state, and beyond. SUNY campuses generate jobs and economic resources, contribute to arts and culture, and are absolutely critical in a multitude of ways to the prosperity and social welfare of our communities.
#1 Overwhelming campus pride! At each campus, SUNY people take enormous pride in who and what they are, and without exception view themselves as Simply the Best!
