Joe Morehead - Personal Retirement Story
In 1998 I retired from the School of Information Science and Policy (as it was then known), in Draper Hall at the University at Albany Downtown Campus.
The year before, I enrolled as a student of the organ at Musicland, then located in the Colonie Center. I had never played any musical instrument before, but the lessons were geared to people 55 or older who had no or little experience in the discipline. I took weekly classes, with a monthly one-on-one tutorial, for six years and gained enough proficiency to enable me to enjoy playing at home by myself. This has been my major retirement hobby and an ongoing recreational pleasure.
I also constructed some 37 crossword puzzles but showed them to only a few long-suffering friends. They were of such inferior quality that they have mercifully been banished to my personal archives, and will remain in that prison forever.
Presently I write book reviews about books of my choice for the Capital District Senior Spotlight, a monthly newspaper distributed free to libraries, senior retirement facilities, and the like.
