Background

The initiative to create the SUNY Retirees Service Corps (RSC) came from the University Faculty Senate with the support of System Administration. Retirees throughout SUNY have a considerable amount of knowledge and experience, but there was no resource to match this expertise to needs within SUNY. A Task Force on Retirees was appointed in January 2007 to study issues relating to SUNY retirees. The Task Force made its report to the University Faculty Senate in April 2007, recommending the establishment of the SUNY RSC to create awareness about the potential value of retired faculty, administrators, and support staff and to encourage campuses to establish programs to promote "retiree-campus-community" relationships. Chancellor John R. Ryan approved the Senate's recommendation, and the SUNY Retirees Service Corps was established in early 2008.
