Educational Opportunity Program

Since 1967, the SUNY Educational Opportunity Program has served as the primary access vehicle for disadvantaged New York State residents who wish to pursue their studies in the University system. The program combines access, academic support and modest financial support to make higher education possible for students who have the potential to succeed, despite poor preparation and limited financial resources. Since program inception, more than 55,000 students have graduated.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for admission through the Educational Opportunity Program, applicants must meet both academic and economic guidelines; and be New York State residents.  For additional information about the Educational Opportunity Program, students may contact any admissions or Educational Opportunity Program office at participating SUNY campuses.

Program Services

While supportive services may vary by campus, most students receive both academic and financial support during their freshman year; room and board; and counseling.   Other services may include: tutoring, developmental coursework, diagnostic testing to determine academic needs, and in most instances, students are required to attend a summer pre-freshman program with instruction prior to fall matriculation.  

Transfer Admission

While most students are first time-full time enrollees, the transfer process is an option for those who meet the criteria. The ability to transfer within Opportunity Programs (EOP, HEOP, CD/SEEK, etc) is intended to facilitate the transition from lower division institutions to upper division institutions and to enable students to make necessary institutional transitions that arise from changes in
