TO:               Campus Presidents

FROM:          David Lavallee Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost

SUBJECT:     Distinguished Faculty Ranks for Academic Years  2011-2012 and 2012-2013

I am writing to invite you to nominate candidates for appointment to one of three Distinguished Faculty Rank designations -- Distinguished Professorship, Distinguished Service Professorship and Distinguished Teaching Professorship. The Distinguished Professorship recognizes instructional faculty who have achieved national or international prominence through significant contributions to research and scholarship, or through artistic performance or achievement in the fine and performing arts. The Distinguished Service Professorship recognizes extraordinary service in the application of intellectual skills drawing from the faculty member’s scholarly and research interests to issues of public concern. The Distinguished Teaching Professorship recognizes a sustained record of outstanding teaching competence at the graduate, undergraduate or professional levels. The Distinguished Faculty Rank is an academic rank above that of full professor and is conferred solely by the SUNY Board of Trustees.

Attached are the Policies and Procedures for academic years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 (available electronically on the State University of New York’s website at http://www.suny.edu/provost/academic_affairs/Dist_Prof_Awards.cfm). You may nominate the number of candidates for Distinguished Service and Distinguished Teaching Professorships indicated in the nomination allocation summary accompanying these materials. To facilitate timely review of nomination portfolios, please submit new submissions by Monday of the second week of September for a November decision, or Monday of the second week in March for a May decision. Late submissions may be considered in the next award cycle.

Please submit all nominations electronically using the format detailed in the appendix, to Awards@SUNY.edu. If you have any questions regarding these procedures or appointments, please contact Dr. Robert Kraushaar via email at Robert.Kraushaar@SUNY.edu.

I look forward to receiving your nominations for appointment to these prestigious programs.
