Vice Provost for Diversity and Educational Equity
Pedro Cabán is the Vice Provost for Diversity and Educational Equity at the State University of New York and professor of Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latino Studies at the University at Albany. Dr. Cabán will develop initiatives for increasing the numbers of faculty and graduate students from historically underrepresented groups, supervise SUNY’s participation in the National Association of System Heads project on reducing the educational gap, and assist campuses in implementing programs that enhance diversity and strengthen their academic mission of providing accessible and affordable education. The Educational Opportunity Programs and Educational Opportunity Centers report to Dr. Caban.
Dr. Cabán received his undergraduate political science degree from the City College of New York and Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University. He has held tenured appointments at Fordham University (1978-1990) and Rutgers University (1990-2002). At the University of Illinois, he was professor of African American Studies and Communications Research (2002-2007). He also taught at Columbia University and was visiting professor of Government at Cornell University. Dr. Cabán served as Chairperson of the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies at Rutgers, Director of the Latino Studies Program at Cornell (1999-2000), and Director of the Latina/o Studies Program at the University of Illinois (2002-2004). At Rutgers University, he was Director of the Center for the Critical Analysis of Contemporary Culture (2002-03).
Dr. Cabán was associate editor of the interdisciplinary journal Latino Studies and senior editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States. He was also a principal consultant for The Latino Experience in U.S. History. Professor Cabán was president of the Puerto Rican Studies Association (2002-2004) and served on the editorial board of Latin American Research Review. He is the recipient of Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation grants, as well as numerous university research grants.
Cabán is the author of Constructing a Colonial People: Puerto Rico and the United States, 1898-1932. He has published dozens of articles, book chapters and review essays on the political economy of Puerto Rico, Latinos in the United States, and the political and intellectual development of race and ethnic studies.
