Harold Silverman
Senior Vice Provost

Harold Silverman is Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at SUNY System Administration. Dr. Silverman joined SUNY in July 2007. Dr. Silverman served as Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and as Graduate School Dean at Louisiana State University before coming to SUNY.

In addition to these roles, during his 26-year career at LSU, he served as Interim Vice Chancellor for Research (2005-2006), Vice Provost for Arts, Science, and Engineering (2004-2005), Dean of the College of Basic Sciences (2000-2004), Associate Dean for Research and Administrative Affairs (1987-1996), and as the inaugural Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences (1997-2000), a department formed from the merger of four smaller departments.

Dr. Silverman was the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on research and educational awards totalling more than 60 million dollars, including more than 20 years continuous funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in support of undergraduate biomedical education initiaitives, and a 17 million NIH award. Dr. Silverman came to LSU in 1981 after spending a year as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas.

Dr. Silverman’s responsibilities in the Provost’s Office include direct oversight of System-wide projects and initiatives. Among these are the Rockefeller Institute of Government, the SUNY Press, the SUNY Compact, the Office of Library and Information Services, the SUNY Learning Network, SUNY Urban Teacher Education Center, the Course Redesign Initiative (CRI), and the Empire Innovation Program.

Dr. Silverman received his BS degree in Zoology from the University of Michigan in 1972. He earned an MS in Microbiology and a PhD in Zoology from Ohio University in 1974 and 1977, respectively. He received a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada, and did his postdoctoral work at the University of Toronto.
