   SUNY's General Education Requirement

When the State University Board of Trustees passed a resolution requiring that a common general education core be implemented across the University, the Office of the Provost was charged with ensuring implementation by the fall 2000 semester.

Resolution 98-241 of the State University Board of Trustees, December of 1998, requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of general education coursework for all University baccalaureate candidates in 10 specific knowledge and skill areas: mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, American history, Western civilization, other world civilizations, humanities, the arts, foreign language, and basic communication; and in two competencies: critical thinking and information management.

CAMPUS GENERAL EDUCATION RESOURCES: Including the Complete Listing of Approved Gen-Ed Courses

Implementation began immediately with the creation of an Advisory Task Force on General Education. The Task Force was charged with developing learning outcomes for each of the content areas and establishing guidelines for the most effective way to move forward. The Task Force ultimately recommended that campuses submit a detailed General Education Program Proposal for review by a newly created body: the Provost's Advisory Council on General Education (PACGE).

In January 2003 Provost Salins implemented new administrative procedures to facilitate ongoing campus responsibility for SUNY-GER curriculum development and for reporting to System Administration. The procedures establish a framework that affords enhanced campus responsibility for approval of SUNY-GER offerings while maintaining System Administration’s accountability to the Board of Trustees.

The procedures require that each campus formally adopt guidelines for the approval of SUNY-GER offerings that incorporate the Task Force learning outcomes in a manner that is consistent with the:

Guidelines for the Approval of Gen Ed Requirement Courses ( link to .pdf file link to .txt file ) .

Once a campus has documented the adoption of these guidelines, the Provost’s Office will operate with the presumption that locally approved SUNY- GER offerings conform to campus and System guidelines. Campuses will continue to submit changes to their rosters of SUNY-GER offerings, and the Office of the Provost will promptly process such submissions. Should questions arise about a particular course submission; the course will be forwarded to the newly formed Advisory Council on General Education (ACGE) for adjudication.
