SUNY Brockport Student Hopes to Build Sudan Schoolhouse

Sebastian Maroundit, a 32-year-old SUNY Brockport student, and his cousin, Mathon Noi, are spending their weekends raising money for a school they hope to build in their native village, Mayen-Abun in Sudan, which was destroyed in a civil war that began when they were only 10 years old.

The cousins created a non-profit organization - Building Minds in Sudan - to raise money to build a school in the village and give children living there today a better education. They need approximately $145,000 to build the school.

Mayen-Abun residents will make the bricks for the school building if the cousins can raise the rest of the money needed to complete the project. The school will house 360 children ages 6 to 12. They hope a six-month construction can begin in Summer 2011.
