Onondaga Arena to Host Community Sporting Events

Work is underway on a new 6,500-seat arena at Onondaga Community College. The $24 million project began in 2010 and will add several major new features to the campus.

The 59,000-square-foot SRC Arena will host high-school athletic events in addition to campus sporting events. Local track and running organizations, for example, will likely make use of the facility’s six-lane, 200-meter track.

Three college-sized basketball courts, which will also convert to tennis and volleyball courts, will be surrounded by the track inside the new arena. Space will also be able to be divided so that several events will be able to take place simultaneously.

The new arena, and an addition to the Health and Physical Education Building at the college, will be complete by December 2011.

The SRC Arena will be operated by a separate nonprofit corporation. The $12.4 million construction costs are funded by the New York State capital construction fund (50 percent); Onondaga County (23 percent); and by OCC and the OCC Foundation (27 percent).
