SUNY Geneseo Group Continues Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

The SUNY Geneseo college/community organization Livingston CARES made its 20th trip to the Biloxi/Gulfport, Miss. Area in January 2011 to continue Hurricane Katrina relief work. The group of 25 is continuing to repair homes and other structures damaged by the devastating storm. On the January trip were 20 Geneseo students, three faculty members and two community members. More than 500 volunteers have been on the work trips since they started in 2005.

“Our 20th trip is a notable milestone but there is still a great amount of work to be done to help the people on the Gulf Coast return to their homes,” said Tom Matthews, director of leadership education, development and training in Geneseo’s Center for Community. “What impresses me about this group is the relatively little recruitment we have to do to get volunteers to sign up for these work trips. It’s very gratifying and actively supports the important service-learning aspects of a liberal arts education. We will continue going until the work is done.”

Livingston CARES is a non-profit group of Geneseo students, faculty and community members dedicated to local and global humanitarian projects. After Hurricane Katrina, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors established a relationship with its counterpart in Harrison County, Mississippi, to assist with the relief and recovery efforts. SUNY Geneseo organized Livingston CARES through the Center for Community, which emphasizes the vital link between service and leadership. The organization has plans for additional works trips to Mississippi in Spring 2011 as well.
