Haiti: Together We Can Help

The system-wide community of the State University of New York has
clearly stated a desire to make a significant, long-term commitment to assist
in Haiti’s
recovery from the devastating earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010. The breadth of academic programs and expertise of our 64 campuses are available
to aid in the multitude of needs emerging as each day passes.
Coordination began in the early days after the
quake
- In accordance with the Trustees’ resolution, a
coordination unit was identified under the Vice Chancellor for Global
Affairs.
- System Administration and each SUNY
institution quickly assessed the size and immediate needs of the SUNY
Haitian community. Nearly 1,000
students and faculty members, including visitors and permanent residents, are
of Haitian origin.
- SUNY institutions immediately focused on their
first obligation, to do all that they can to support their current
students of Haitian origin. Many of
our students suffered significant personal or family loss.
- Conversations with our partner, the Organization of American States
(OAS), began very soon after the earthquake. The OAS staff and their office personnel
in Port-au-Prince
bring considerable expertise and on-the-ground knowledge. Together, we can provide a strong
response to the urgent need for human resource development and educational
assistance.[OAS letter] [PDF]
