This title is in the unclassified service and is designated Managerial/Confidential. Appointees to Managerial/Confidential titles serve at the pleasure of the chief administrative officer and are not represented for collective negotiations.
Positions in this family direct the management, operation and administration of a university-based teaching, research and patient care hospital and also provide liaison and coordination between the university's hospital and those in the area in affiliation with it.
VICE PRESIDENT FOR HOSPITAL AFFAIRS or HOSPITAL DIRECTOR or HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR
All three classifications have approximately the same duties, responsibilities and qualifications.
Planned refinement of the title structure should bring about one classification instead of the present three.
Directs the operation of a teaching-research hospital, which is used to support a teaching and research program in the medical sciences and allied health professions and a program of patient care and community health. Does related work as required. In consultation and responsible coordination with administration, faculty and consultant architect and engineers, plans and directs the development of such a hospital; upon its completion, acts as operational administrator and coordinator of the complex; develops an effective team of medical, allied health professionals and others who work in the hospital and sees that supporting facilities, services and equipment are available for the needs of the teaching, research and patient activities of the health science center; copes with the many complex, emergency and unexpected demands which arise daily in a hospital of this kind; serves on a variety of health science center and other councils and committees; keeps pace with the latest developments in hospital administration and assures the highest level of operating efficiency, quality and economy within the hospital to bring about the lowest possible cost to the consumer; works closely with the chiefs of services, faculty, house staff and directors of the affiliated hospitals in the area so all operate as a whole in support of the health science center's program; directs many programs unique to this kind of hospital, such as in-patient and out-patient care coordination, a variety of other services rendered patients, hospital floor management, administration of a computing center, relations with the center's business office in such areas as patient charges, billing, collection, third party payments and purchasing, the assurance of high quality and sterile housekeeping and operation and maintenance of plant, personnel management, public relations, volunteer services, and other sensitive programs, so the life and care of the injured and frequently quite ill patients are maintained and enhanced; is responsible for the hospital's accreditation; represents the hospital in the community.
A Master's degree in hospital administration and several years of increasingly responsible experience in hospital administration, preferably in a teaching-research hospital.
