Heart Disease Research at SUNY

Faculty on campuses throughout SUNY are unlocking the mysteries of heart disease, a wide range of conditions that afflict more Americans than any other illness. Research into the conditions affecting the heart muscle, valves and arteries promises a brighter future for those with, or at risk for, heart disease.

Detect

  • Dr. Donald Hickey *, research assistant professor of Physiology at the University at Buffalo, developed a safe monitoring system of cardiac performance

  • Dr. Omer Berenfeld, research assistant professor of Pharmacology at Upstate Medical University, is developing a system to analyze and diagnose cardiac arrhythmias

Heart Disease Research
Dr. José Jalife, director of Upstate Medical University’s Institute for Cardiovascular Research and chair of the Pharmacology Department.

Prevent and Treat

  • Dr. Albert Millis, chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University at Albany, is working with a protein to inhibit vascular cell migration that causes blocked heart arteries

  • Dr. M.A.Q. Siddiqui, chairman of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, is developing molecular-based therapies for abnormal heart growth (hypertrophy) and hypertension

  • At Binghamton, Drs. John Baust and Robert Van Buskirk, professors of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University, are developing new solutions that enhance the viability of tissues and organs used in the treatment of heart disease

  • Dr. José Jalife, director of Upstate Medical University’s Institute for Cardiovascular Research and chair of the Pharmacology Department, is revealing the molecular mechanisms of cardiac fibrillation

  • Dr. Paresh Dandona, distinguished professor of Medicine at the University at Buffalo, is exploring how insulin may be used to improve a heart attack patient's chances of survival
