Since SUNY began coordinating system-wide requests for federal funding in 2001, congressional appropriations have provided more than $161 million in additional funding for the State University of New York.

Congressional appropriations in the FY 2010 federal budget provided $16.5 million in support of 27 projects at SUNY institutions. These projects have the potential to provide significant benefits for the people and businesses throughout New York State.

The Office of Federal Relations began tracking SUNY's congressionally directed funding in 2001. At that time, SUNY began submitting coordinated appropriations requests to Members of Congress. Through this coordinated approach, at the end of FY 2002, SUNY campuses had been awarded $11.2 million worth of appropriations. The following year, FY 2003, that increased by $15.3 million, in FY 2004 another increase by $33.2 million, in FY 2005 the awards totaled $27.4 million, in FY 2006 awards totaled $15.7 million, in FY 2007 awarded totaled $9.6 million, in FY 2008 totals amounted to $16.7 million, in FY 2009 totals amounted to $14.8 million and finally in FY 2010 totals amounted to $16.5 million. The total for FY 2002 through 2010 pushed SUNY's totals to roughly $161.2 million in direct appropriations.

The NYS delegation in Washington enjoys seniority on many key committees in both houses. Members of Congress have said that they are impressed with SUNY's professional and organized approach to seeking federal funding.
