Academic Medical Centers

SUNY’s four academic medical centers generate 1/3 of all SUNY research dollars, and on average, return $10 for every dollar invested in cutting-edge research. They provide nearly 25,000 direct jobs, educate nearly 7,000 students, and provide health care services to more than one million patients throughout New York State.

University at Buffalo

Health Related Schools at the University at Buffalo include: Dental Medicine, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Public Health, Health Professions, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute Graduate Division. They serve more than 3,500 students. Hospital and Research Affiliates include: Great Lakes Health Care System (6 Hospitals), Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, and VA Western NY Health Care System at Buffalo.

Downstate Medical Center

Downstate Medical Center includes four colleges: Medicine, Graduate Studies, Nursing, and Health Related Professions. It also includes a Plus Public Health Program and Joint Biomedical Engineering with Brooklyn Polytech. The center serves more than 1,500 students, nearly 1,000 residents, nearly 700 faculty and 7,000 employees. It is Broklyn's 6th largest employer.

Stony Brook Health Sciences Center

The Stony Brook Health Sciences Center includes five schools: Medicine, Dental Medicine, Health Technology and Management, Nursing, and Social Welfare. It serves more than 3,000 students, and 500 residents, nearly 800 faculty, and approximately 8,000 employees.

Upstate Medical Center

Upstate Medical Center includes four colleges: Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, and Graduate Studies. It serves more than 1,000 students, approximately 300 residents, nearly 100 faculty, and more than 7,000 employees. It is the largest employer in Onondaga County. 

University Hospitals

SUNY's three University Hospitals annually updates a multi-year strategic plan, providing a longer term projection of hospital operations and the impact of capital and operating initiatives. As public hospitals, they each provide a full spectrum of patient care, from primary care to highly specialized, technologically advanced (tertiary) care.  

University Hospital Brooklyn (UHB)

The only teaching hospital serving Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, the University Hospital at SUNY Downstate includes 376 licensed beds, plus 30 bassinets, with 8 intensive care and step-down units with over 16,700 inpatient discharges and 63,400 emergency room visits in 2007. UHB also includes an ambulatory care center with some 75 clinics plus 3 satellite health centers with 315,000 outpatient visits in 2007. UHB is the State designated regional perinatal center and staffs the Level I trauma center at Kings County Hospital, which is across the street. Eighty three percent of UHB’s patients live in a Service Area comprised of 12 zip codes that are home to more than 1 million people.

Stony Brook University Hospital

Stony Brook University Hospital is the only tertiary care hospital in Suffolk County. It serves as the Level I regional trauma center and regional perinatal center for eastern Long Island and has the county’s only burn center, kidney transplant program, open heart surgery program and stroke center. It includes more than 500 licensed beds, and has over 28,000 inpatient discharges and over 68,000 emergency room visits annually. The hospital has eight primary care satellite sites in eastern Long Island.

University Hospital Syracuse

The University Hospital at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse is the only tertiary care center in Central New York and serves 17 counties. It includes six State-designated centers, including Level I regional trauma, burn, stroke, diabetes and pediatric intensive care. It has more than 400 licensed beds, with over 16,000 inpatient discharges, 50,000 emergency room visits annually. It also includes 77 different hospital based specialty clinics, which have more than 300,000 outpatient visits annually.

College of Optometry

The College of Optometry includes a University Optometric Center (Clinical facility), Schnurmacher Institute for Vision Research, and the Center for Vision Care Policy. It serves approximately 300 students and 100 faculty.  

Long Island State Veterans Home

The Long Island State Veterans Home is a 350-bed skilled nursing facility with adult day care. It includes a 55-bed Alzheimer’s Unit, 60-bed Respiratory Care Unit, and Onsite Medical Services in Audiology, Opthalmology, Podiatry, Urology, Dentistry, Psychiatry and Psychology.
