Education Pipeline

What we know ...

For every 100 ninth graders in New York:

  • 57 will graduate from high school on time with their peers. Of those ...
  • 41 will immediately enter college. Of those ...
  • 31 will still be enrolled in college by their second year. Of those ...
  • 21 will need three or more remedial college classes. Of those ...
  • 19 will graduate from college with an Associate’s Degree within three years or a Bachelor’s Degree within six years.

Low rates of kindergarten-readiness, proficiency in math and English language arts, on-time high school graduation, and college completion have a ripple effect throughout our local, regional, statewide, national and global communities.

What we believe ...

SUNY sees education in New York State as a pipeline that starts not when a student reaches college, but from the moment that student is born - and finds ways to close the gaps that impede success.

The Office of the Education Pipeline seeks ways to minimize attrition throughout the 'cradle to career' continuum, with particular emphasis on developing highly-effective teachers and providing cooperative education experiences to adult learners.

Our vision is for more students to complete high school and college prepared for a career in the 21st-century workforce.

What we're doing to realize our vision...

The Power of SUNY Strategic Plan prioritizes the development of an inclusive and seamless education pipeline as an imperative to fuel the economic revitalization of New York State. As the nation’s largest comprehensive system of public higher education, SUNY is aggressively pursuing "systemness" - coordinating multiple components that, when working together, create a network of activity more powerful than any action of individual parts on their own.

SUNY's Office of the Education Pipeline is leading transformational initiatives that are grounded in research, focused on improving outcomes of the system of education in New York State, and provide statewide frameworks to accelerate progress on the ground in all ten economic regions of the state.

Click on the links below to learn more about these initiatives:

  • Smart Scholars Early High Schools to expand opportunities across the state for students in grade 9-12 to participate in early college high schools, a proven model for increasing graduation rates and post-secondary success
  • Empire State STEM Learning Network regional community collaboratives to increase the number of STEM graduates from community colleges and four-year colleges and universities to fuel research and innovation in a diverse entrepreneurial economy
  • SUNY Works to increase experiential learning opportunities that are essential to preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s careers and reducing the amount of time it takes adult students to earn a post-secondary degree
  • Remediation Reform at the community college-level to increase the effectiveness of developmental education and reduce the cost of college for many New Yorkers
