Postsecondary Education and Students with Disabilities

Where They Go

Students with disabilities are attending the State University of New York (SUNY), City University of New York (CUNY), independent colleges and universities and degree-granting proprietary colleges. Of the total number of college students with disabilities in 1997, 14,358 individuals were attending SUNY colleges and universities; 7,013 individuals were attending CUNY colleges and universities; 9,024 individuals were attending independent colleges and universities; and 404 were enrolled in degree-granting proprietary colleges (see Figure 2).

A large percentage of college students with disabilities attend community colleges, which accounts for only 19 percent of the institutions of higher education in New York State. Of the 30,889 enrolled students with disabilities (see Figure 3), 10,596 (more than 34 percent) are enrolled in community colleges.
