It has been a month of impressive international events for SUNY. I have highlighted a few below that have received attention on the world stage.

A New Transatlantic Agenda for the 21st Century

At a panel discussion organized by the The Neil D. Levin Graduate Institute of International Relations and Commerce and the American Council on Germany on September 24, 2008, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, and former National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft addressed roughly 140 representatives from the New York business and policymaking communities in the Institute’s Global Classroom – as well as nearly 50 additional guests in overflow rooms – about the current and future foreign policy challenges facing the transatlantic community.

Chinese Premier Hails SUNY-China 150 Program

On September 23, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao delivered an address on Sino-American relations to 550 guests at a luncheon held in his honor by the National Committee and the US-China Business Council in New York. At that luncheon he said:

"Thanks to efforts of the U.S. government and people of various sectors, 150 Chinese students from the earthquake-hit areas are now studying in the State University of New York. I am convinced that when they return to China after finishing their studies here, they will be able to better help the building of their homeland and will surely join in the endeavor to promote China-U.S. friendship."

Enrollment Boom for SUNY’s Turkey Dual Diploma Program-Largest in the Country

SUNY’s 23 dual diplomas programs with partner universities in the country of Turkey have admitted 450 new students this fall, the highest number of students to enroll in the SUNY-Turkey dual diplomas programs in a single semester since their inception in 2003. With approximately 1,700 students enrolled this fall and 260 already graduated from the programs, SUNY’s academic partnership with Turkey continues to be the largest of its kind in the America. Additionally, the President of the Turkish Higher Education Council, Dr. Ziya Ozcan, will be in the U.S. during mid-October under the Voluntary Visitors Program of the Department of State.  Visits to SUNY-Binghamton and SUNY-New Paltz have been arranged by Associate Vice Chancellor for International Programs, Bob Gosende, during which President Ozcan will meet with some of the dual diploma students.  Dr. Ozcan was appointed in early 2008, this is his first visit to SUNY.
