Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, created in 1997, honors State University of New York students who have best demonstrated and been recognized for their integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives, which may include leadership, athletics, career achievement, community service or creative and performing arts.

The 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence ceremony and reception will take place on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, New York.

Directions & Parking

Directions to the Empire State Plaza Convention Center

Below you will find driving directions from the North, South, East, and West. Also, for those that use a GPS, the address for the Empire State Plaza Convention Center is 4 Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12210. For more information you can contact Office of General Services Parking Management directly via phone 518.474.8118 or via email at parking.courier@ogs.ny.gov.

From the North: Take Interstate I-87 (Northway) to Interstate I-90 East (exit # 1E). Take Interstate I-90 East to Interstate 787 South, then take Exit #3A for the Empire State Plaza.

From the South: Take New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) to Exit 23 - straight through Toll Booth to Interstate 787, then take Exit #3A for the Empire State Plaza.

From the East: Take Interstate 90 West to Exit # B1 (I-90). Continue on I-90 to Interstate 787 South. Follow I-787 South to Exit #3A for the Empire State Plaza.

From the West: Take the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) to Exit 24 (Albany), proceed east on Interstate 90 to Interstate 787 South. Take exit # 3A for the Empire State Plaza.

Parking at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center

The best parking lot to park in is V Lot, which can be found outlined in red. Parking Lot V is directly below the Egg and the Convention Center on this map. However, since it is first come, first serve the lot might be full by the time you arrive. Just in case you arrive and V Lot is full, all of the yellow parking lots are places where you can park downtown near the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.

Located beneath the Empire State Plaza and accessed through I-787 Empire State Plaza exit. Visitors are required to show photo identification upon entry and all vehicles are subject to search by the State Police.

Congratulations! Below is everything you need to know about the Chancellors Awards for Student Excellence and the awards ceremony and reception.  If questions still remain, feel free to contact us via email at awardsul@sysadm.suny.edu or via phone at 518.320.1286.  We look forward to meeting you on April 5, 2011 for the ceremony!

Nomination to Notification
Once your nomination was sent to the State University of New York System Administration, a selection committee reviewed your nomination.  Committee members included campus staff, students, and system administration staff.  The selection committee met for one day and reviewed all of the applications using a rubric. 

Once the award recipients were selected, a letter was sent out informing the nominees if they will or will not received the award.  Nominees with a permanent residence in the United States will receive their letter at that address, while nominees with a permanent residence outside of the United States will receive their letter at their local, campus address. 

Nuts and Bolts for the Ceremony & Reception
Why is it important to attend the ceremony and reception?
Most importantly attending the Ceremony and Reception allows you to be recognized for all of your hard work for all of your many accomplishments.  Also, at the ceremony you will receive your medallion and award plaque, as well as having your picture taken with the Chancellor and a campus rep. 

Who can attend?
You are encouraged to invite up to four people to attend the ceremony.  Those people might be family, friends, professors, or mentors who have helped you to achieve your accomplishments.  You need to email the name of your guests to awardsul@sysadm.suny.edu no later than March 25, 2011.

Where and when do I need to be on April 5th?
The Ceremony and Reception takes place on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, New York.  The event starts at 3pm; however, we ask that you arrive no later than 2pm.  Please leave your coats, purses and/or other belongs with your guests prior to signing in at the separate student only room, meeting room #2.  There you will receive further instructions about the event.

What should I wear?
Appropriate attire might be similar to the outfit you wore or are planning to wear to graduation or a job interview. 

What if I cannot attend the ceremony & reception?
Please make sure if you are not attending that you notify awardsul@sysadm.suny.edu by March 25, 2011.  Also, your plaque and medallion will be sent to your campus.

Information for Campus Presidents or Designees
Another year of honoring outstanding students has arrived!  Students have been selected for the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence based on nominations from your campus.  You are cordially invited to attend the ceremony and reception on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, New York. 

Information leading up to the Ceremony & Reception
Thank you for supporting this prestigious award. A list of this year’s recipients was mailed to you, as well as, posted on this website.  You are encouraged to contact each student from your campus to offer your congratulations and to ensure that he/she has received the appropriate notification.

You are cordially invited to attend the ceremony and walk on the stage to join the Chancellor when she presents your students with a medallion and plaque.  You are asked to respond by March 25, 2011 to let us know if you, as the president, will attend the ceremony or if you plan to send a campus designee in your place. Please note that only one campus representative will be allowed on stage. Responses should be emailed to Lisa Kelsey at Lisa.Kelsey@suny.edu. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Kelsey at 518.320.1305.

Information about the Ceremony & Reception
Please plan to arrive at the Empire State Convention Center by 2:00 p.m. and proceed to Meeting Room # 7, for campus presidents or designee. You can bring your belongs with you and keep them at your seat while you are on stage.  From there more information will be given.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence is an amazing accomplishment, one that could not be achieved without your support.  Students were encouraged to invite up to four people to attend the ceremony that have helped them to achieve their excellence.

How was my recipient selected?

Does my recipient need to inform anyone that I will be attending?
Your recipient needs to email the name of their guests, including you,  to awardsul@sysadm.suny.edu no later than March 25, 2011.

Where and when do I need to be on April 5th?
The Ceremony and Reception takes place on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, New York.  It is important that your recipients leave their coats, purses and/or other belongs with you prior to signing in a separate student only room.  The event starts at 3pm; however, we ask that guest be seated at 2.30pm.  There are designated seating for the award recipients and campus presidents or designees, all other seating is open for guests. 

Will I be able to take photos during the event?
You will be allowed to take photos during the event.  Also, a professional photographer will be capturing the moment.

What if your recipient cannot attend the ceremony & reception?
If your recipient does not attend, then his/her plaque and medallion will be sent to their campus.
